श्रीशुक उवाच स इत्थमाचरन् कामान् स्त्रैणोऽपह्नवमात्मनः । बुद्ध्वा प्रियायै निर्विण्णो गाथामेतामगायत ॥ ९-१९-१ ॥
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O Mahārāja Parīkṣit, Yayāti was very much attached to woman. In due course of time, however, when disgusted with sexual enjoyment and its bad effects, he renounced this way of life and narrated the following story to his beloved wife. ॥ 9-19-1 ॥

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा : हे महाराज परीक्षित, ययाति स्त्री पर अत्यधिक अनुरक्त था। किन्तु कालक्रम से जब वह विषय-भोग तथा इसके बुरे प्रभावों से ऊब गया तो उसने यह जीवन-शैली त्याग दी और अपनी प्रिय पत्नी को निम्नलिखित कहानी सुनाई। ॥ ९-१९-१ ॥

शृणु भार्गव्यमूं गाथां मद्विधाचरितां भुवि । धीरा यस्यानुशोचन्ति वने ग्रामनिवासिनः ॥ ९-१९-२ ॥
My dearly beloved wife, daughter of Śukrācārya, in this world there was someone exactly like me. Please listen as I narrate the history of his life. By hearing about the life of such a householder, those who have retired from householder life always lament. ॥ 9-19-2 ॥

हे मेरी प्रिय पत्नी एवं शुक्राचार्य की बेटी, इस संसार में बिल्कुल मेरी ही तरह का कोई था। तुम मेरे द्वारा कही जा रही उसके जीवन की कथा सुनो। ऐसे गृहस्थ के जीवन के विषय में सुनकर वे लोग सदैव पछताते हैं जिन्होंने गृहस्थ जीवन से वैराग्य ले लिया है। ॥ ९-१९-२ ॥

बस्त एको वने कश्चिद्विचिन्वन् प्रियमात्मनः । ददर्श कूपे पतितां स्वकर्मवशगामजाम् ॥ ९-१९-३ ॥
While wandering in the forest, eating to satisfy his senses, a he-goat by chance approached a well, in which he saw a she-goat standing helplessly, having fallen into it by the influence of the results of fruitive activities. ॥ 9-19-3 ॥

एक बकरा अपनी इन्द्रियों को तुष्ट करने के लिए चरते हुए किसी जंगल में घूमते-घूमते अचानक एक कुएँ के पास आया जिसके भीतर उसने एक बकरी को निस्सहाय खड़ी देखा जो अपने सकाम कर्मों के प्रभाव से कुएँ में गिर गई थी। ॥ ९-१९-३ ॥

तस्या उद्धरणोपायं बस्तः कामी विचिन्तयन् । व्यधत्त तीर्थमुद्धृत्य विषाणाग्रेण रोधसी ॥ ९-१९-४ ॥
After planning how to get the she-goat out of the well, the lusty he-goat dug up the earth on the well’s edge with the point of his horns in such a way that she was able to come out very easily. ॥ 9-19-4 ॥

बकरी को कुएँ से बाहर निकालने की योजना बनाकर, विषयी बकरे ने अपने तीखे सींगों से कुएँ के किनारे की मिट्टी खोद डाली जिससे वह बकरी कुएँ से बाहर सरलता से निकल सकी। ॥ ९-१९-४ ॥

सोत्तीर्य कूपात्सुश्रोणी तमेव चकमे किल । तया वृतं समुद्वीक्ष्य बह्व्योऽजाः कान्तकामिनीः ॥ ९-१९-५ ॥
When the she-goat, who had very nice hips, got out of the well and saw the very handsome he-goat, she desired to accept him as her husband. ॥ 9-19-5 ॥

जब सुन्दर पुट्ठों वाली बकरी कुएँ से बाहर आ गई और उसने अत्यन्त सुन्दर बकरे को देखा तो उसने उसे अपना पति बनाना चाहा। ॥ ९-१९-५ ॥
