स तेपे मन्दरद्रोण्यां तपः परमदारुणम् । ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्नभोदृष्टिः पादाङ्गुष्ठाश्रितावनिः ।। ७-३-२ ।।

sanskrit

In the valley of Mandara Hill, Hiraṇyakaśipu began performing his austerities by standing with his toes on the ground, keeping his arms upward and looking toward the sky. This position was extremely difficult, but he accepted it as a means to attain perfection. ।। 7-3-2 ।।

english translation

हिरण्यकशिपु ने मन्दर पर्वत की घाटी में अपने पाँव के अँगूठे के बल भूमि में खड़े होकर, अपनी भुजाएँ ऊपर किये तथा आकाश की ओर देखते हुए अपनी तपस्या प्रारम्भ की। यह अवस्था अतीव कठिन थी, किन्तु सिद्धि प्राप्त करने के लिए उसने इसे स्वीकार किया। ।। ७-३-२ ।।
