श्रीशुक उवाच ऊचतुर्मृतकोपान्ते पतितं मृतकोपमम् । शोकाभिभूतं राजानं बोधयन्तौ सदुक्तिभिः ।। ६-१५-१ ।।

Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: While King Chitraketu, overcome by lamentation, lay like a dead body at the side of the dead body of his son, the two great sages Nārada and Aṅgirā instructed him about spiritual consciousness as follows. ।। 6-15-1 ।।

english translation

श्री शुकदेव गोस्वामी बोले—जब राजा चित्रकेतु शोकग्रस्त होकर अपने पुत्र के शव के निकट पड़े मृतप्राय हुए थे तो नारद तथा अंगिरा नामक दो महर्षियों ने उन्हें आध्यात्मिक चेतना के सम्बन्ध में इस प्रकार उपदेश दिया। ।। ६-१५-१ ।।

कोऽयं स्यात्तव राजेन्द्र भवान् यमनुशोचति । त्वं चास्य कतमः सृष्टौ पुरेदानीमतः परम् ।। ६-१५-२ ।।

O King, what relationship does the dead body for which you lament have with you, and what relationship do you have with him? You may say that you are now related as father and son, but do you think this relationship existed before? Does it truly exist now? Will it continue in the future? ।। 6-15-2 ।।

english translation

हे राजन्! जिस शव के लिए तुम शोक कर रहे हो उसका तुमसे और तुम्हारा उसके साथ क्या सम्बन्ध है? तुम कह सकते हो कि इस समय तुम पिता हो और वह पुत्र है, किन्तु क्या तुम सोचते हो कि यह सम्बन्ध पहले भी था? क्या सचमुच अब भी यह सम्बन्ध है? क्या यह भविष्य में भी बना रहेगा? ।। ६-१५-२ ।।

यथा प्रयान्ति संयान्ति स्रोतोवेगेन वालुकाः । संयुज्यन्ते वियुज्यन्ते तथा कालेन देहिनः ।। ६-१५-३ ‌।।

O King, as small particles of sand sometimes come together and are sometimes separated due to the force of the waves, the living entities who have accepted material bodies sometimes come together and are sometimes separated by the force of time. ।। 6-15-3 ।।

english translation

हे राजन्! जिस प्रकार बालू के छोटे-छोटे कण लहरों के वेग से कभी एक दूसरे के निकट आते हैं और कभी विलग हो जाते हैं, उसी प्रकार से देहधारी जीवात्माएँ काल के वेग से कभी मिलती हैं, तो कभी बिछुड़ जाती हैं। ।। ६-१५-३ ।।

yathA prayAnti saMyAnti srotovegena vAlukAH | saMyujyante viyujyante tathA kAlena dehinaH || 6-15-3 ‌||

यथा धानासु वै धाना भवन्ति न भवन्ति च । एवं भूतेषु भूतानि चोदितानीशमायया ।। ६-१५-४ ।।

When seeds are sown in the ground, they sometimes grow into plants and sometimes do not. Sometimes the ground is not fertile, and the sowing of seeds is unproductive. Similarly, sometimes a prospective father, being impelled by the potency of the Supreme Lord, can beget a child, but sometimes conception does not take place. Therefore one should not lament over the artificial relationship of parenthood, which is ultimately controlled by the Supreme Lord. ।। 6-15-4 ।।

english translation

जब बीजों को धरती में बोया जाता है, तो वे कभी तो उगते हैं और कभी नहीं उगते। कभी धरती उपजाऊ नहीं रहती जिससे बीजों का बोना निरर्थक हो जाता है। इसी प्रकार परमात्मा की शक्ति से बाध्य होने पर भावी पिता को कभी सन्तान की प्राप्ति होती है, तो कभी गर्भ ही नहीं रहता। अत: मनुष्य को चाहिए कि वह माता-पिता जैसे बनावटी सम्बन्ध के लिए शोक न करे, क्योंकि अन्तत: इसका नियंत्रण परमेश्वर के हाथों में रहता है। ।। ६-१५-४ ।।

वयं च त्वं च ये चेमे तुल्यकालाश्चराचराः । जन्ममृत्योर्यथा पश्चात्प्राङ् नैवमधुनापि भोः ।। ६-१५-५ ।।

O King, both you and we — your advisers, wives and ministers — as well as everything moving and not moving throughout the entire cosmos at this time, are in a temporary situation. Before our birth this situation did not exist, and after our death it will exist no longer. Therefore our situation now is temporary, although it is not false. ।। 6-15-5 ।।

english translation

हे राजन्! तुम तथा हम अर्थात् तुम्हारे परामर्शदाता, पत्नियाँ एवं मंत्री और समस्त सम्पूर्ण जगत में इस समय जितने भी स्थावर-जंगम प्राणी हैं, वे सभी क्षणभंगुर हैं। यह स्थिति न तो हमारे जन्म के पूर्व थी और न हमारी मृत्यु के पश्चात् रहेगी। अत: इस समय हमारी स्थिति क्षणिक (अस्थायी) है, यद्यपि वह मिथ्या नहीं है। ।। ६-१५-५ ।।
