यस्त्विह वै सर्वाभिगमस्तममुत्र निरये वर्तमानं वज्रकण्टकशाल्मलीमारोप्य निष्कर्षन्ति ।। ५-२६-२१ ।।

sanskrit

A person who indulges in sex indiscriminately — even with animals — is taken after death to the hell known as Vajrakaṇṭaka-śālmalī. In this hell there is a silk-cotton tree full of thorns as strong as thunderbolts. The agents of Yamarāja hang the sinful man on that tree and pull him down forcibly so that the thorns very severely tear his body. ।। 5-26-21 ।।

english translation

जो व्यक्ति विवेकहीन होकर—यहाँ तक कि पशुओं के साथ भी—व्यभिचार करता है उसे मृत्यु के बाद वज्रकंटकशाल्मली नामक नरक में ले जाया जाता है। इस नरक में वज्र के समान कठोर काँटों वाला सेमल का वृक्ष है। यमराज के दूत पापी पुरुष को इस वृक्ष से लटका देते हैं और घसीटकर नीचे की ओर खींचते हैं जिससे काँटों के द्वारा उसका शरीर बुरी तरह चिथड़ जाता है। ।। ५-२६-२१ ।।

A person who is born into a responsible family — such as a kṣatriya, a member of royalty or a government servant — but who neglects to execute his prescribed duties according to religious principles, and who thus becomes degraded, falls down at the time of death into the river of hell known as Vaitaraṇī. This river, which is a moat surrounding hell, is full of ferocious aquatic animals. When a sinful man is thrown into the river Vaitaraṇī, the aquatic animals there immediately begin to eat him, but because of his extremely sinful life, he does not leave his body. He constantly remembers his sinful activities and suffers terribly in that river, which is full of stool, urine, pus, blood, hair, nails, bones, marrow, flesh and fat. ।। 5-26-22 ।।

जो मनुष्य श्रेष्ठ कुल—यथा क्षत्रिय, राज परिवार या अधिकारी वर्ग—में जन्म ले करके नियत नियमों के पालन की अवहेलना करता है और इस प्रकार से अधम बन जाता है, वह मृत्यु के समय वैतरणी नामक नरक की नदी में जा गिरता है। यह नदी नरक को घेरने वाली खाईं के समान है और अत्यन्त हिंस्र जलजीवों से पूर्ण है। जब पापी मनुष्य को वैतरणी नदी में फेंका जाता है, तो जल के जीव उसे तुरन्त खाने लगते हैं और पापमय शरीर होने के कारण वह अपने शरीर को त्याग नहीं पाता। वह निरन्तर अपने पापमय कर्मों को स्मरण करता है और मल, मूत्र, पीब, रक्त, केश, नख, हड्डी, मज्जा, मांस तथा चर्बी से भरी हुई उस नदी में अत्यधिक यातनाएँ पाता है। ।। ५-२६-२२ ।।

ये त्विह वै वृषलीपतयो नष्टशौचाचारनियमास्त्यक्तलज्जाः पशुचर्यां चरन्ति ते चापि प्रेत्य पूयविण्मूत्रश्लेष्ममलापूर्णार्णवे निपतन्ति तदेवातिबीभत्सितमश्नन्ति ।। ५-२६-२३ ।।

The shameless husbands of lowborn śūdra women live exactly like animals, and therefore they have no good behavior, cleanliness or regulated life. After death, such persons are thrown into the hell called Pūyoda, where they are put into an ocean filled with pus, stool, urine, mucus, saliva and similar things. Śūdras who could not improve themselves fall into that ocean and are forced to eat those disgusting things. ।। 5-26-23 ।।

english translation

निम्नकुल में जन्मी शूद्र स्त्रियों के निर्लज्ज पति पशुओं की भाँति रहते हैं, अत: उनमें आचरण, शुचिता या नियमित जीवन का अभाव रहता है। ऐसे व्यक्ति मृत्यु के पश्चात् पूयोद नामक नरक में फेंक दिये जाते हैं जहाँ वे मल, पीब, श्लेष्मा, लार तथा ऐसी ही अन्य वस्तुओं से पूर्ण समुद्र में रखे जाते हैं। जो शूद्र अपने को नहीं सुधार पाते वे इस सागर में गिरकर इन घृणित वस्तुओं को खाने के लिए बाध्य किये जाते हैं। ।। ५-२६-२३ ।।

If in this life a man of the higher classes [brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya and vaiśya] is very fond of taking his pet dogs, mules or asses into the forest to hunt and kill animals unnecessarily, he is placed after death into the hell known as Prāṇarodha. There the assistants of Yamarāja make him their targets and pierce him with arrows. ।। 5-26-24 ।।

यदि इस जीवन में उच्च वर्ग का मनुष्य (ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय तथा वैश्य) कुत्ते, गधे तथा खच्चर पालता है और उन्हें जंगल में आखेट करने तथा वृथा ही पशुओं को मारने में अत्यधिक रुचि लेता है, तो मृत्यु के पश्चात् वह प्राणरोध नामक नरक में डाला जाता है। वहाँ पर यमराज के दूत उसे लक्ष्य बनाकर अपने तीरों से बेध डालते हैं। ।। ५-२६-२४ ।।

A person who in this life is proud of his eminent position, and who heedlessly sacrifices animals simply for material prestige, is put into the hell called Viśasana after death. There the assistants of Yamarāja kill him after giving him unlimited pain. ।। 5-26-25 ।।

जो व्यक्ति इस जन्म में अपने ऊँचे पद पर गर्व करता है और केवल भौतिक प्रतिष्ठा के लिए पशुओं की बलि चढ़ाता है, उसे मृत्यु के पश्चात् वैशसन नामक नरक में रखा जाता है। वहाँ यम के दूत उसे अपार कष्ट देकर अन्त में उसका वध कर देते हैं। ।। ५-२६-२५ ।।
