श्रीशुक उवाच एतावानेव भूवलयस्य सन्निवेशः प्रमाणलक्षणतो व्याख्यातः ।। ५-२१-१ ।।

sanskrit

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: My dear King, I have thus far described the diameter of the universe [fifty crores of yojanas, or four billion miles] and its general characteristics, according to the estimations of learned scholars. ।। 5-21-1 ।।

english translation

श्रीशुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा—हे राजन्, मैंने यहाँ तक आपसे विद्वानों के अनुमानों के आधार पर ब्रह्माण्ड के व्यास (पचास करोड़ योजन या ४ अरबमील) तथा इसके सामान्य लक्षणों का वर्णन किया है। ।। ५-२१-१ ।।

एतेन हि दिवो मण्डलमानं तद्विद उपदिशन्ति यथा द्विदलयोर्निष्पावादीनां ते अन्तरेणान्तरिक्षं तदुभयसन्धितम् ।। ५-२१-२ ।।

sanskrit

As a grain of wheat is divided into two parts and one can estimate the size of the upper part by knowing that of the lower, so, expert geographers instruct, one can understand the measurements of the upper part of the universe by knowing those of the lower part. The sky between the earthly sphere and heavenly sphere is called antarikṣa, or outer space. It adjoins the top of the sphere of earth and the bottom of that of heaven. ।। 5-21-2 ।।

english translation

जिस प्रकार गेहूँ के दाने को भागों में विभाजित कर देने पर निचले भाग के परिमाण (आकार) का ज्ञान होने पर ऊपरी भाग का पता लगाया जाता है उसी प्रकार भूगोलवेत्ताओं का कहना है कि इस ब्रह्माण्ड के ऊपरी भाग की माप को तभी समझा जा सकता है, जब निचले भाग की माप ज्ञात हो। भूलोक तथा द्युलोक के बीच का आकाश अन्तरिक्ष अथवा बाह्य- आकाश कहलाता है। यह भूलोक की चोटी तथा द्युलोक के निचले भाग को जोड़ता है। ।। ५-२१-२ ‌।।

यन्मध्यगतो भगवांस्तपतां पतिस्तपन आतपेन त्रिलोकीं प्रतपत्यवभासयत्यात्मभासा स एष उदगयनदक्षिणायनवैषुवतसंज्ञाभिर्मान्द्यशैघ्र्यमानाभिर्गतिभिरारोहणावरोहणसमानस्थानेषु यथा सवनमभिपद्यमानो मकरादिषु राशिष्वहोरात्राणि दीर्घह्रस्वसमानानि विधत्ते ।। ५-२१-३ ।।

In the midst of that region of outer space [antarikṣa] is the most opulent sun, the king of all the planets that emanate heat, such as the moon. By the influence of its radiation, the sun heats the universe and maintains its proper order. It also gives light to help all living entities see. While passing toward the north, toward the south or through the equator, in accordance with the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it is said to move slowly, swiftly or moderately. According to its movements in rising above, going beneath or passing through the equator — and correspondingly coming in touch with various signs of the zodiac, headed by Makara [Capricorn] — days and nights are short, long or equal to one another. ।। 5-21-3 ।।

उस अन्तरिक्ष के मध्य में ताप उत्पन्न करने वाले समस्त ग्रहों का राजा परम तेजवान सूर्य है जो अपने प्रकाश से समस्त ब्रह्माण्ड को तप्त करता है और उसको वास्तविक स्वरूप प्रदान करता है। यह समस्त जीवात्माओं को प्रकाश प्रदान करता है, जिससे वे देख पाते हैं। श्रीभगवान् की आज्ञानुसार वह उत्तरायण, दक्षिणायन होकर या विषुवत रेखा को पार करते हुए मन्द, शीघ्र और मध्यम गतियों से घूमता हुआ समयानुसार मकरादि राशियों में ऊँचे-नीचे और समान स्थानों में जाकर दिन तथा रात को बड़ा, छोटा या समान बनाता है। ।। ५-२१-३ ‌‌।।

यदा मेषतुलयोर्वर्तते तदाहोरात्राणि समानानि भवन्ति यदा वृषभादिषु पञ्चसु च राशिषु चरति तदाहान्येव वर्धन्ते ह्रसति च मासि मास्येकैका घटिका रात्रिषु ।। ५-२१-४ ।।

When the sun passes through Meṣa [Aries] and Tulā [Libra], the durations of day and night are equal. When it passes through the five signs headed by Vṛṣabha [Taurus], the duration of the days increases [until Cancer], and then it gradually decreases by half an hour each month, until day and night again become equal [in Libra]. ।। 5-21-4 ।।

english translation

जब सूर्य मेष या तुला राशि पर आता है, तो दिन और रात की अवधि समान हो जाती है। जब यह वृषभ इत्यादि पाँचों राशियों पर से गुजरता है, तो दिन (कर्क तक) बढ़ता जाता है और तब प्रति मास आधा घंटा घटता रहता है, जब तक दिन तथा रात्रि पुन: (तुला में) समान नहीं हो जाते। ।। ५-२१-४ ।।

यदा वृश्चिकादिषु पञ्चसु वर्तते तदाहोरात्राणि विपर्ययाणि भवन्ति ।। ५-२१-५ ।।

sanskrit

When the sun passes through the five signs beginning with Vṛścika [Scorpio], the duration of the days decreases [until Capricorn], and then gradually it increases month after month, until day and night become equal [in Aries]. ।। 5-21-5 ।।

english translation

जब सूर्य वृश्चिक इत्यादि पाँच राशियों से होकर गुजरता है, तो दिन घटता है (जब तक यह मकर राशि पर नहीं आ जाता) और फिर क्रमश: मास प्रति मास बढ़ता जाता है जब तक दिन और रात समान (मेष पर) नहीं हो जाते। ।। ५-२१-५ ।।
