क्वचिद्गृहाश्रमकर्मचोदनातिभरगिरिमारुरुक्षमाणो लोकव्यसनकर्षितमनाः कण्टकशर्कराक्षेत्रं प्रविशन्निव सीदति ।। ५-१४-१८ ।।

In household life one is ordered to execute many yajñas and fruitive activities, especially the vivāha-yajña [the marriage ceremony for sons and daughters] and the sacred thread ceremony. These are all the duties of a gṛhastha, and they are very extensive and troublesome to execute. They are compared to a big hill over which one must cross when one is attached to material activities. A person desiring to cross over these ritualistic ceremonies certainly feels pains like the piercing of thorns and pebbles endured by one attempting to climb a hill. Thus the conditioned soul suffers unlimitedly. ।। 5-14-18 ।।

english translation

गृहस्थाश्रम में नाना प्रकार के यज्ञ तथा कर्मकाण्ड (विशेष रूप से पुत्र-पुत्रियों के लिए विवाह यज्ञ और यज्ञोपवीत संस्कार) करने होते हैं। ये सभी गृहस्थ के कर्तव्य हैं। ये अत्यन्त व्यापक होते हैं और इनको सम्पन्न करना कष्टदायक होता है। इनकी उपमा एक बड़ी पहाड़ी से दी जाती है, जिसे सांसारिक कर्मों में संलग्न होने पर लाँघना ही पड़ता है। जो व्यक्ति इन अनुष्ठानों पर विजय प्राप्त करना चाहता है उसे पहाड़ी में चढ़ते समय काँटों तथा कंकड़ों के चुभने से होने वाली पीड़ा का-सा अनुभव करना होता है। इस प्रकार बद्धजीव को अनन्त यातनाएँ सहनी पड़ती हैं। ।। ५-१४-१८ ।।
