Understanding this, a person who is in the āśrama of Lord Śiva should perform the rituals, and there is no other method. Ashes collected from the fire of Lord Śiva or from the sacrificial fire.

न क्लिन्नं नातिकठिनं न दुर्गन्धं न शोषितम् ॥ उपर्यधः परित्यज्य गृह्णीयात्पतितं यदि ॥ ५५ ॥

It was neither wet nor too hard nor bad smelling nor dry. If he falls down he should leave the top and bottom and catch it.
