ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ किं तच्छ्रेष्टमनुष्ठानं मोक्षो येनपरोक्षितः ॥ तत्तस्य साधनं चाद्य वक्तुमर्हसि मारुत ॥ १ ॥
The sages said:— What is that excellent practice of holy rites, whereby salvation is directly acquired? O Māruta, it behoves you to explain it as well as its means.
english translation
RSaya UcuH ॥ kiM tacchreSTamanuSThAnaM mokSo yenaparokSitaH ॥ tattasya sAdhanaM cAdya vaktumarhasi mAruta ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवायुरुवाच ॥ शैवो हि परमो धर्मः श्रेष्ठानुष्ठानशब्दितः ॥ यत्रापरोक्षो लक्ष्येत साक्षान्मोक्षप्रदः शिवः ॥ २ ॥
Vāyu said:— What is termed excellent practice is the great cult of Śiva wherein Śiva the bestower of salvation is directly perceived.
english translation
vAyuruvAca ॥ zaivo hi paramo dharmaH zreSThAnuSThAnazabditaH ॥ yatrAparokSo lakSyeta sAkSAnmokSapradaH zivaH ॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस तु पञ्चविधो ज्ञेयः पञ्चभिः पर्वभिः क्रमात् ॥ क्रियातपोजपध्यानज्ञानात्मभिरनुत्तरैः ॥ ३ ॥
It is fivefold divided into five sections, holy rites, penance, japa, meditation and knowledge.
english translation
sa tu paJcavidho jJeyaH paJcabhiH parvabhiH kramAt ॥ kriyAtapojapadhyAnajJAnAtmabhiranuttaraiH ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतैरेव सोत्तरैस्सिद्धो धर्मस्तु परमो मतः ॥ परोक्षमपरोक्षं च ज्ञानं यत्र च मोक्षदम् ॥ ४ ॥
The five activities along with attendant virtuous rites constitute the greatest Dharma. Thereby one attains the direct and indirect knowledge that bestows salvation.

taireva sottaraissiddho dharmastu paramo mataH ॥ parokSamaparokSaM ca jJAnaM yatra ca mokSadam ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरमो ऽपरमश्चोभौ धर्मौ हि श्रुतिचोदितौ ॥ धर्मशब्दाभिधेयेर्थे प्रमाणं श्रुतिरेव नः ॥ ५ ॥
The two Dharmas the higher and secondary are mentioned in the Vedas. In the matter of Dharma the Vedas constitute the final authority for us.

paramo 'paramazcobhau dharmau hi zruticoditau ॥ dharmazabdAbhidheyerthe pramANaM zrutireva naH ॥ 5 ॥
