याचमानाश्च सलिलमन्नं वापि बुभुक्षिताः ।। छायां प्रार्थयमानाश्च शीतार्ताश्चानलं पुनः ।। ४१।।

sanskrit

They were hungry and begging for water or food They were cold and praying for shade and again for the fire.

english translation

yAcamAnAzca salilamannaM vApi bubhukSitAH || chAyAM prArthayamAnAzca zItArtAzcAnalaM punaH || 41||

दानहीनाः प्रयांत्येवं प्रार्थयंतस्सुखं नराः ।। गृहीतदान पाथेयास्सुखं यांति यमालयम् ।। ४२ ।।

sanskrit

Thus men go away without charity praying for happiness Those who take charity and follow the path happily go to the abode of Yama.

english translation

dAnahInAH prayAMtyevaM prArthayaMtassukhaM narAH || gRhItadAna pAtheyAssukhaM yAMti yamAlayam || 42 ||

एवं न्यायेन कष्टेन प्राप्ताः प्रेतपुरं यदा ।। प्रज्ञापितास्ततो दूतैर्निवेश्यंते यमाग्रतः ।। ४३ ।।

sanskrit

Having thus traversed the path they finally reach the city of the dead with great hardship. They are then ushered into the presence of Yama by the emissaries after due announcement.

english translation

evaM nyAyena kaSTena prAptAH pretapuraM yadA || prajJApitAstato dUtairnivezyaMte yamAgrataH || 43 ||

तत्र ये शुभकर्म्माणस्तांस्तु सम्मानयेद्यमः ।। स्वागतासनदानेन पाद्यार्घ्येण प्रियेण च ।। ४४।।

sanskrit

Yama welcomes with pleasure and due honour, all those who had performed auspicious rites in this world. He offers them seat, pādya and Arghya.

english translation

tatra ye zubhakarmmANastAMstu sammAnayedyamaH || svAgatAsanadAnena pAdyArghyeNa priyeNa ca || 44||

धन्या यूयं महात्मानो निगमोदितकारिणः ।। यैश्च दिव्यसुखार्थाय भवद्भिस्सुकृतं कृतम् ।। ४५।।

sanskrit

Yama tells them—“You are noble souls duly blessed, since you have performed what is ordained in the Vedas. Good deeds that are conducive to divine happiness have been performed by you.

english translation

dhanyA yUyaM mahAtmAno nigamoditakAriNaH || yaizca divyasukhArthAya bhavadbhissukRtaM kRtam || 45||
