विधितो गोश्च दानं वै सर्वोत्तममिह स्मृतम् ।। न तेन सदृशं व्यास परं दानं प्रकीर्तितम् ।। २१।।

The gift of the cow duly performed is the most excellent. O Vyāsa, no other gift is glorified so much as this.

english translation

vidhito gozca dAnaM vai sarvottamamiha smRtam || na tena sadRzaM vyAsa paraM dAnaM prakIrtitam || 21||

प्रयच्छते यः कपिलां सवत्सां स्वर्णशृंगिकाम् ।। कांस्यपात्रां रौप्यखुरां सर्वलक्षणलक्षिताम् ।। २२ ।।

sanskrit

He who offers Kapila with her calf with golden horns The bronze vessel with silver hooves was marked with all the characteristics.

english translation

prayacchate yaH kapilAM savatsAM svarNazRMgikAm || kAMsyapAtrAM raupyakhurAM sarvalakSaNalakSitAm || 22 ||

तैस्तैर्गुणैः कामदुघा भूत्वा सा गौरुपैति तम्।। प्रदातारं नरं व्यास परत्रेह च जन्मनि ।। २३।।

sanskrit

By those qualities she becomes the milk of desire and attains to him in the form of a cow. A man who gives, O Vyasa, in this life and in the next.

english translation

taistairguNaiH kAmadughA bhUtvA sA gaurupaiti tam|| pradAtAraM naraM vyAsa paratreha ca janmani || 23||

यद्यदिष्टतमं लोके यदस्ति दयितं गृहे।। तत्तद्गुणवते देयं तदेवाक्षयमिच्छता।। २४।।

sanskrit

One shall make gifts of such things to a man of good qualities, such thing as he likes most in the world, as are very dear to him in the house and as are wished for by him to be his permanent possessions.

english translation

yadyadiSTatamaM loke yadasti dayitaM gRhe|| tattadguNavate deyaM tadevAkSayamicchatA|| 24||

तुलापुरुषदानं हि दानानां दानमुत्तमम्।। तुलासंरोहणं कार्यं यदीच्छेच्छ्रेय आत्मनः।। २५।।

sanskrit

Gifts of anything equal in weight to the giver is the most excellent of all gifts. If he wishes for his prosperity he shall ascend the weighing balance.

english translation

tulApuruSadAnaM hi dAnAnAM dAnamuttamam|| tulAsaMrohaNaM kAryaM yadIcchecchreya AtmanaH|| 25||
