वेदा यज्ञास्तथा मंत्रास्संति विप्रेषु नित्यशः ॥ नोभांत्यपि ह्यसत्येषु तस्मात्सत्यं समाचरेत् ॥ ३६ ॥
The Veda’s, the sacrifices and the Mantras exist in brahmins for ever. They are never visible to the untruthful. Hence one shall always speak truth.
english translation
॥ व्यास उवाच ॥ तपसो मे फलं ब्रूहि पुनरेव विशेषतः ॥ सर्वेषां चैव वर्णानां ब्राह्मणानां तपोधन ॥ ३७ ॥
Vyāsa said:— O ascetic, please explain again with special emphasis on the fruit of penance for the brahmins as well as other castes.
english translation
सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ प्रवक्ष्यामि तपोऽध्यायं सर्व कामार्थसाधकम् ॥ सुदुश्चरं द्विजातीनां तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥ ३८ ॥
Sanatkumāra said:— I shall explain the section on penance (tapas) which is the means of achieving all the objects of desire, very difficult to be performed even by brahmins. Please listen even as I explain.
english translation
तपो हि परमं प्रोक्तं तपसा विद्यते फलम् ॥ तपोरता हि ये नित्यं मोदंते सह दैवतैः ॥ ३९ ॥
Penance is the greatest rite. Fruits are achieved by penance. Those who are engaged in penance incessantly rejoice along with the gods.

तपसा प्राप्यते स्वर्गस्तपसा प्राप्यते यशः ॥ तपसा प्राप्यते कामस्तपस्सर्वार्थसाधनम् ॥ ४० ॥
Heaven, fame and love are achieved through penance. Penance is the means of achievement for all objects.
