॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ गतेषु तेषु मुनिषु स्वं लोकं शंकरः स्वयम् ॥ परीक्षितुं तपो देव्या ऐच्छत्सूतिकरः प्रभुः ॥१॥

Brahmā said: When those sages returned to their abodes, lord Śiva, the cause of great enjoyment and protection wanted to test the penance of the goddess.
