रत्यै यद्भवता दत्तो वरस्तस्य परात्पर ॥ प्राप्तोऽवसर एवाशु सफलं स्वपणं कुरु ॥ ५६ ॥
The opportune moment for the fulfilment of the boon granted by you to Ratī has arrived. Make your promise fruitful.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा तं प्रणम्यैव विष्णुर्देवा महर्षयः ॥ संस्तूय विविधैस्तोत्रैस्संतस्थुस्तत्पुरोऽखिलाः ॥५७॥
Brahmā said: After saying this and bowing to and eulogising Him with different hymns, Viṣṇu, the gods and the sages, all of us waited in front of Him.

भक्ताधीनः शंकरोऽपि श्रुत्वा देववचस्तदा ॥ विहस्य प्रत्युवाचाशु वेदमर्यादरक्षकः ॥ ५८ ॥
On hearing the words of the gods Śiva, subservient to His devotees, laughed and replied. Śiva is a strict preserver of Vedic conventions.

॥ शंकर उवाच ॥ हे हरे हे विधे देवाश्शृणुतादरतोऽखिलाः ॥ यथोचितमहं वच्मि सविशेषं विवेकतः ॥५९॥
Śiva said: O Viṣṇu, O Brahmā, O gods, all of you please hear with attention. I am going to say a specific thing in a suitable manner.

नोचितं हि विधानं वै विवाहकरणं नृणाम् ॥ महानिगडसंज्ञो हि विवाहो दृढबन्धनः ॥2-3-24-६०॥
Marrying is not a proper thing for men. Marriage is a great fetter that binds firmly.
