नारद उवाच ॥ विधे तात महाप्राज्ञ विष्णुशिष्य त्रिलोककृत् ॥ अद्भुतेयं कथा प्रोक्ता शंकरस्य महात्मनः ॥ १ ॥
Nārada said: O dear Brahmā, O disciple of Viṣṇu, of great intellect. O Creator of three worlds, this is a very wonderful story of the great soul Śiva that has been narrated.
english translation
भस्मीभूते स्मरे शंभुतृतीयनयनाग्निना ॥ तस्मिन्प्रविष्टे जलधौ वद त्वं किमभूत्ततः ॥२॥
When Kāma had been reduced to ashes by the fire from the third eye of Śiva and when that fire had been deposited in the ocean what happened thereafter?
english translation
किं चकार ततो देवी पार्वती कुधरात्मजः ॥ गता कुत्र सखीभ्यां सा तद्वदाद्य दयानिधे ॥३॥
What did Goddess Pārvatī, the daughter of the lord of mountains, do? O storehouse of mercy, please tell me now where she went along with her maids.
english translation
॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ शृणु तात महाप्राज्ञ चरितं शशिमौलिनः ॥ महोतिकारकस्यैव स्वामिनो मम चादरात् ॥ ४ ॥
Brahmā said: O dear, of great intellect, listen to the story of the moon crested lord, my master and the cause of great enjoyment and protection.
english translation
यदाहच्छंभुनेत्रोद्भवो हि मदनं शुचिः ॥ महाशब्दोऽद्भुतोऽभूद्वै येनाकाशः प्रपूरितः ॥ ५ ॥
A wonderfully loud sound arose covering the whole firmament when the fire issuing from Śiva’s eye burnt Kāma.
