तस्यां नृपसभायां वै नारदः समुपाविशत् ।। स्थित्वा तत्र विचिन्त्येति प्रीतियुक्तेन चेतसा ।।३६।।

sanskrit

Nārada too went in and sat down in the hall of his king. With his mind surging with love he began to think like this.

english translation

tasyAM nRpasabhAyAM vai nAradaH samupAvizat || sthitvA tatra vicintyeti prItiyuktena cetasA ||36||

मां वरिष्यति नान्यं सा विष्णुरूपधरन्ध्रुवम् ।। आननस्य कुरूपत्वं न वेद मुनिसत्तमः ।। ३७ ।।

sanskrit

“She will choose only me since I am in Viṣṇu’s form”. The poor sage did not know the ugly character of his face.

english translation

mAM variSyati nAnyaM sA viSNurUpadharandhruvam || Ananasya kurUpatvaM na veda munisattamaH || 37 ||

पूर्वरूपं मुनिं सर्वे ददृशुऽस्तत्र मानवाः। तद्भेदं बुबुधुस्ते न राजपुत्रादयो द्विजाः ।। ३८ ।।

sanskrit

The men assembled there saw the sage only in his old form. O brahmins, the princes and others did not know the difference created therein.

english translation

pUrvarUpaM muniM sarve dadRzu'statra mAnavAH| tadbhedaM bubudhuste na rAjaputrAdayo dvijAH || 38 ||

तत्र रुद्रगणौ द्वौ तद्रक्षणार्थं समागतौ ।। विप्ररूपधरौ गूढौ तत्रेदं जज्ञतुः परम्।।३९।।

Two of the attendants of Rudra knew this difference. They had come there in the guise of brahmins in order to protect him.

मूढं मत्वा मुनिं तौ तन्निकटं जग्मतुर्गणौ ।। कुरुतस्तत्प्रहासं वै भाषमाणौ परस्परम् ।। 2.1.3.४० ।।

Considering the sage a fool, the two attendants sat near the sage and began to mock at him seemingly conversing between themselves.
