नारद उवाच॥ कथं तया तपस्तप्तं किमर्थं कुत्र संध्यया॥ कथं शरीरं सा त्यक्त्वाऽभवन्मेधातिथेः सुता॥११॥
How did she perform penance? Why and where? How did she cast off her body and become the daughter of Medhātithi?
english translation
कथं वा विहितं देवैर्ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवैः पतिम्। वसिष्ठं तु महात्मानं संवव्रे शंसितव्रतम्॥१२॥
What did the deities Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva command her to do? and how did she choose the noble-souled Vasiṣṭha of praiseworthy rites as her husband?
english translation
एतन्मे श्रोष्यमाणाय विस्तरेण पितामह॥ कौतूहलमरुंधत्याश्चरितं ब्रूहि तत्त्वतः ॥१३॥ ।
I am eager to hear all these things. O Grand Father, tell me in detail the story of Sandhyā precisely.
english translation
ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ अहं स्वतनयां संध्यां दृष्ट्वा पूर्वमथात्मनः॥ कामायाशु मनोऽकार्षं त्यक्त्वा शिवभयाच्च सा ॥१४॥
Brahmā said: Formerly on seeing Sandhyā, my daughter, I cherished a love for her, which, being afraid of Śiva, I forsook.
english translation
संध्यायाश्चलितं चित्तं कामबाणविलोडितम् ॥ ऋषीणामपि संरुद्धमानसानां महात्मनाम्॥१५॥
Sandhyā’s mind too was shaken on being stirred by Kāma’s arrows. The same had happened with the mind of the noble-souled sages who had so far curbed their minds.
