महातपोनलज्वालां प्राप्यापि सुचिरं विभो ॥ न दग्धा कृत्तिरेषा मे पुण्यगंधनिधेस्ततः ॥ ६१ ॥
O lord, even after being scorched by the flames of the fire of penance for a long time, this hide was not burnt, hence it is the storehouse of holy fragrance.
english translation
यदि पुण्यवती नैषा मम कृत्ति दिगंबर ॥ तदा त्वदंगसंगोस्याः कथं जातो रणांगणे ॥६२॥
O nude one, if my hide is not meritorious how did it get into contact with your limbs in the battlefield?
english translation
अन्यं च मे वरं देहि यदि तुष्टोऽसि शंकर ॥ नामास्तु कृत्तिवासास्ते प्रारभ्याद्यतनं दिनम् ॥६३॥
O Śiva, if you are satisfied, please grant me another boon. Beginning from today let your name be Kṛttivāsas (one clad in elephant-hide).
english translation
सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ श्रुत्वेति स वचस्तस्य शंकरो भक्तवत्सलः॥ तथेत्युवाच सुप्रीतो महिषासुरजं च तम् ॥६४॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing his words, Śiva who is favourably disposed to his devotees, was pleased and replied to Gajāsura, the son of Mahiṣa “Let it be so”.
english translation
पुनः प्रोवाच प्रीतात्मा दानवं तं गजासुरम् ॥ भक्तप्रियो महेशानो भक्तिनिर्मलमानसम्॥६५॥
Lord Śiva, the favourite of his devotees, becoming delighted spoke again to the Dānava Gajāsura whose mind had been purified by devotion.
