शिवैक्यं सुमहापात्रं तपोग्निपरिबृंहितम्॥ कामक्रोधमहाविघ्नपतंगाघात वर्जितम् ॥ ६ ॥
He could realise his identity with Śiva. Then he performed very severe penance for two hundred thousand years—a penance which was enhanced by the fire of austerity, was free from incroachment of the firefly in the form of interference from lust and anger.

प्राणसंरोधनिर्वातं निर्मलं निर्मलेक्षणात् ॥ संस्थाप्य शांभवं लिंगं सद्भावकुसुमार्चितम् ॥ ७ ॥
He was windless inasmuch as the breath was curbed and was pure in form with pure vision. He set up the liṅga of Śiva and worshipped it with flowers of good ideas and feelings.

तावत्तताप स तपस्त्वगस्थिपरिशेषितम् ॥ यावद्बभूव तद्वर्णं वर्षाणामयुतं शतम् ॥८॥
He practiced such intense penance that only skin and bones remained. He continued until his body took on that (ascetic) appearance—for a full hundred thousand years.

ततस्सह विशालाक्ष्या देवो विश्वेश्वररस्वयम्॥ अलकापतिमालोक्य प्रसन्नेनांतरात्मना ॥९॥
Then in the company of the Goddess Pārvatī, the lord Viśveśvara Himself addressed the devotee, the lord of Alakā, with a pleasant mind.
english translation
लिंगे मनस्समाधाय स्थितं स्थाणुस्वरूपिणम्॥ उवाच वरदोऽस्मीति तदाचक्ष्वालकापते ॥ ॥ 2-1-19-१० ॥
The devotee who stood as a stump with mind concentrated on the liṅga:—“I am ready to grant you a boon. Choose it, O lord of Alakā”.
