व्यास उवाच ॥ शुक्रे निगीर्णे रुद्रेण किमकार्षुश्च दानवाः ॥ अंधकेशा महावीरा वद तत्त्वं महामुने ॥ १ ॥
Vyāsa said: O Great sage, when Bhārgava was swallowed by Rudra what did the heroic Dānavas headed by Andhaka, do? Please narrate.

सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ काव्ये निगीर्णे गिरिजेश्वरेण दैत्या जयाशारहिता बभूवुः ॥ हस्तैर्विमुक्ता इव वारणेन्द्राः शृंगैर्विहीना इव गोवृषाश्च ॥२॥
Sanatkumāra said: When Bhārgava was swallowed by the lord of Pārvatī the Daityas gave up hopes of victory, like lordly elephants bereft of trunks or cows and bulls devoid of horns.
english translation
शिरो विहीना इव देवसंघा द्विजा यथा चाध्ययनेन हीनाः ॥ निरुद्यमास्सत्त्वगणा यथा वै यथोद्यमा भाग्यविवर्जिताश्च ॥ ३ ॥
They were as futile as headless trunks, as brahmins who have forsaken the study of the Vedas, as the living beings who have given up efforts and as the efforts of those who are not favoured by good fortune.
english translation
पत्या विहीनाश्च यथैव योषा यथा विपक्षाः खलु मार्गणौघाः ॥ आयूंषि हीनानि यथैव पुण्यैर्व्रतैर्विहीनानि यथा श्रुतानि ॥४॥
They were lustreless and ineffectual like women devoid of husbands, like the arrows devoid of feather, like longevity devoid of meritorious actions and like learning in the Vedas without the observance of sacred rites.
english translation
विना यथा वैभवशक्तिमेकां भवंति हीनास्स्वफलैः क्रियौघाः ॥ यथा विशूराः खलु क्षत्रियाश्च सत्यं विना धर्मगणो यथैव ॥ ५ ॥
They were as powerless as innumerable activities rendered fruitless without the support of wealth, or as Kṣatriyas devoid of heroism or as the assemblage of virtue without truth.
