दीपं मंदप्रभं दृष्ट्वा पक्वान्नवीक्षणाय सः ॥ निजचैलांजलाद्वर्तिं कृत्वा दीपं प्रकाश्य च ॥१६॥
The lamp was burning very dimly. Hence in order to see the puddings clearly he tore a piece of cloth from his lower garment and put that piece in the lamp as a wick thus making the lamp give a good light.
english translation
dIpaM maMdaprabhaM dRSTvA pakvAnnavIkSaNAya saH ॥ nijacailAMjalAdvartiM kRtvA dIpaM prakAzya ca ॥16॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयज्ञदत्तात्मजस्सोऽथ शिवनैवेद्यमादरात् ॥ जग्राह सहसा प्रीत्या पक्वान्न वहुशस्ततः ॥ १७ ॥
Yajñadatta’s son gleefully took plenty of the sweets offered as eatables to Lord Śiva by the devotees.
english translation
yajJadattAtmajasso'tha zivanaivedyamAdarAt ॥ jagrAha sahasA prItyA pakvAnna vahuzastataH ॥ 17 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततः पक्वान्नमादाय त्वरितं गच्छतो बहिः ॥ तस्य पादतलाघातात्प्रसुप्तः कोप्यबुध्यत ॥१८॥
With sweets in his hands he came out hurriedly. In his hurry he stamped on some person lying there who woke up immediately.
english translation
tataH pakvAnnamAdAya tvaritaM gacchato bahiH ॥ tasya pAdatalAghAtAtprasuptaH kopyabudhyata ॥18॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकोऽयं कोऽयं त्वरापन्नो गृह्यतां गृह्यता मसौ ॥ इति चुक्रोश स जनो गिरा भयमहोच्चया ॥ १९ ॥
“Who is that? Who is running away so fast? Catch him.” So shouted the man who woke up in a voice hoarse with fear.
english translation
ko'yaM ko'yaM tvarApanno gRhyatAM gRhyatA masau ॥ iti cukroza sa jano girA bhayamahoccayA ॥ 19 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयावद्भयात्समागत्य तावत्स पुररक्षकैः ॥ पलायमानो निहतः क्षणादंधत्वमागतः ॥ 2-1-18-२० ॥
The brahmin boy (Guṇanidhi) who ran for life became blind. So he was caught and killed by the watchmen on duty.
english translation
yAvadbhayAtsamAgatya tAvatsa purarakSakaiH ॥ palAyamAno nihataH kSaNAdaMdhatvamAgataH ॥ 2-1-18-20 ॥
