सनत्कुमार उवाच॥ एवं शासति धर्मेण महीं तस्मिन्महासुरे॥ बभूवुर्दुःखिनो देवा भ्रातृभावान्मुनीश्वर ॥१॥
Sanatkumāra said: When the great Asura was ruling over the Earth virtuously, the gods were reduced to be mere slaves, O great sage.
english translation
sanatkumAra uvAca॥ evaM zAsati dharmeNa mahIM tasminmahAsure॥ babhUvurduHkhino devA bhrAtRbhAvAnmunIzvara ॥1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदुःखितास्ते सुरास्सर्वे शिवं शरणमाययुः ॥ मनसा शंकरं देवदेवं सर्वप्रभुंप्रभुम्॥२॥
The distressed gods mentally sought refuge in Śiva the benefactor, lord of gods and of everyone.

duHkhitAste surAssarve zivaM zaraNamAyayuH ॥ manasA zaMkaraM devadevaM sarvaprabhuMprabhum॥2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतुष्टुवुर्वाग्भिरिष्टाभिर्भगवंतं महेश्वरम् ॥ निवृत्तये स्वदुःखस्य सर्वदं भक्तवत्सलम् ॥ ३ ॥
They eulogised the great lord, the bestower of everything and favourably disposed to his devotees, by means of pleasant words.
english translation
tuSTuvurvAgbhiriSTAbhirbhagavaMtaM mahezvaram ॥ nivRttaye svaduHkhasya sarvadaM bhaktavatsalam ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआहूय स महादेवो भक्तानां सर्वकामदः॥॥ नारदं प्रेरयामास देवकार्यचिकीर्षया ॥ ४ ॥
The great lord, the bestower of all desires to his devotees called Nārada and commissioned him with a desire to carry out the task of the gods.
english translation
AhUya sa mahAdevo bhaktAnAM sarvakAmadaH॥॥ nAradaM prerayAmAsa devakAryacikIrSayA ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअथ देवमुनिर्ज्ञानी शंभुभक्तस्सतां गतिः ॥ शिवाज्ञया ययौ दैत्यपुरे देवान्स नारदः ॥ ५ ॥
Then the celestial sage, the wise devotee of Śiva, the goal of the good, went to the gods in the city of the Asuras at the bidding of Śiva.

atha devamunirjJAnI zaMbhubhaktassatAM gatiH ॥ zivAjJayA yayau daityapure devAnsa nAradaH ॥ 5 ॥
