एवं मया कृतं तत्र तपोत्युग्रं मुनीश्वर ।। तथापि शंकरो मह्यं न प्रसन्नोऽभवन्मनाक् ।। ४१ ।।

O great sage, thus I performed a severe penance there. Still Śiva was not even slightly pleased with me.

english translation

evaM mayA kRtaM tatra tapotyugraM munIzvara || tathApi zaMkaro mahyaM na prasanno'bhavanmanAk || 41 ||

तदा मया तु क्रुद्धेन भूमौ गर्तं विधाय च ।। तत्राग्निं समाधाय पार्थिवं च प्रकल्प्य च ।। ४२ ।।

Then I angrily dug a hole in the ground There he placed the fire and made the earth.

tadA mayA tu kruddhena bhUmau gartaM vidhAya ca || tatrAgniM samAdhAya pArthivaM ca prakalpya ca || 42 ||

गंधैश्च चंदनैश्चैव धूपैश्च विविधैस्तदा ।। नैवेद्यैः पूजितश्शम्भुरारार्तिकविधानतः ।। ४३ ।।

Then they offered fragrant sandalwood paste and various kinds of incense Lord Śambhu was worshiped with offerings in accordance with the rituals of Arartika.

gaMdhaizca caMdanaizcaiva dhUpaizca vividhaistadA || naivedyaiH pUjitazzambhurArArtikavidhAnataH || 43 ||

प्रणिपातैः स्तवैः पुण्यैस्तोषितश्शंकरो मया।। गीतैर्नृत्यैश्च वाद्यैश्च मुखांगुलिसमर्पणैः ।। ४४ ।।

Śiva was propitiated by me by obeisances, eulogies, songs, dances, musical instruments and mystic gestures of faces and fingers.

एतैश्च विविधैश्चान्यैरुपायैर्भूरिभिर्मुने ।। शास्त्रोक्तेन विधानेन पूजितो भगवान् हरः ।। ४५।।

By such different modes and various other means lord Śiva was worshipped by me according to the rules laid down in the Śāstras.
