सूत उवाच ।। रावणः राक्षसश्रेष्ठो मानी मानपरायणः ।। आरराध हरं भक्त्या कैलासे पर्वतोत्तमे।। १।।

sanskrit

Sūta said:— Rāvaṇa the arrogant and prestige-minded leader of Rākṣasas propitiated Śiva with devotion on the excellent mountain Kailāsa.

english translation

sUta uvAca || rAvaNaH rAkSasazreSTho mAnI mAnaparAyaNaH || ArarAdha haraM bhaktyA kailAse parvatottame|| 1||

आराधितः कियत्कालं न प्रसन्नो हरो यदा।। तदा चान्यत्तपश्चक्रे प्रासादार्थे शिवस्य सः।। २।।

sanskrit

Though the worship continued for a long time, Śiva was not delighted. Then Rāvaṇa performed another penance to delight Śiva.

english translation

ArAdhitaH kiyatkAlaM na prasanno haro yadA|| tadA cAnyattapazcakre prAsAdArthe zivasya saH|| 2||

नतश्चायं हिमवतस्सिद्धिस्थानस्य वै गिरेः।। पौलस्त्यो रावणश्श्रीमान्दक्षिणे वृक्षखंडके।। ३।।

sanskrit

He bowed down to the mountain of the Himalayas which is the abode of perfection Paulastya and Ravana were handsome in the southern part of the tree.

english translation

natazcAyaM himavatassiddhisthAnasya vai gireH|| paulastyo rAvaNazzrImAndakSiNe vRkSakhaMDake|| 3||

भूमौ गर्तं वर कृत्वा तत्राग्निं स्थाप्य स द्विजाः।। तत्सन्निधौ शिवं स्थाप्य हवनं स चकार ह।। ४।।

sanskrit

ग्रीष्मे पंचाग्निमध्यस्थो वर्षासु स्थंडिलेशयः ।। शीते जलांतरस्थो हि त्रिधा चक्रे तपश्च सः।। ५।।

sanskrit

He performed three types of penance. During the summer he stationed himself in the midst of five fires, during rainy days he lay on the bare ground and in the winter he stood within water and performed his penance.

english translation

grISme paMcAgnimadhyastho varSAsu sthaMDilezayaH || zIte jalAMtarastho hi tridhA cakre tapazca saH|| 5||
