चकारैवं बहुतपो न प्रसन्नस्तदापि हि ॥ परमात्मा महेशानो दुराराध्यो दुरात्मभिः ॥ ६ ॥
Thus he performed penance a great deal. Even then Śiva the supreme soul, difficult to be propitiated by the wicked was not delighted.

ततश्शिरांसि छित्त्वा च पूजनं शंकरस्य वै ॥ प्रारब्धं दैत्यपतिना रावणेन महात्मना ॥ ७॥
Then the ambitious Rāvaṇa, lord of Daityas, began to worship Śiva by cutting off his heads.

एकैकं च शिरश्छिन्नं विधिना शिवपूजने ॥ एवं सत्क्रमतस्तेन च्छिन्नानि नव वै यदा ॥ ६ ॥
Each of the heads was cut off in accordance with the rituals in the worship of Lord Shiva. When he had thus cut off nine of them in good order.
english translation
एकस्मिन्नवशिष्टे तु प्रसन्नश्शंकरस्तदा ॥ आविर्बभूव तत्रैव संतुष्टो भक्तवत्सलः ॥ ९॥
Then Lord Śiva was pleased with the one remaining Satisfied and affectionate to his devotees he appeared there.

शिरांसि पूर्ववत्कृत्वा नीरुजानि तथा प्रभुः ॥ मनोरथं ददौ तस्मादतुलं बलमुत्तमम् ॥ १० ॥
The lord reinstated the severed heads without causing pain and conferred on him his desire as well as unequalled excellent strength.
