कस्यां योन्यां तपोवृद्ध वर्तसे दृढविक्रम । कौतूहलात्त्वां पृच्छामि रामो दाशरथिर्ह्यहम् ॥ 7-75-16 ॥
In which caste were you born, O one grown in penance, O firm in valor? Out of curiosity I ask you, for I am Rama, the son of Dasharatha.
english translation
को ऽर्थो मनीषितस्तुभ्यं स्वर्गलाभः परो ऽथवा । वराश्रयो यदर्थं त्वं तपस्यसि सुदुष्करम् । यमाश्रित्य तपस्तप्तं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तापस ॥ 7-75-17 ॥
What is the object you desire — the attainment of heaven, or some other supreme boon as your refuge — for the sake of which you practice this most difficult austerity? Relying upon what aim has this penance been undertaken? That I wish to hear, O ascetic."
english translation
ब्राह्मणो वा ऽसि भद्रं ते क्षत्रियो वा ऽसि दुर्जयः । वैश्यस्तृतीयवर्णो वा शूद्रो वा सत्यवाग्भव ॥ 7-75-18 ॥
"Are you a Brahmana — blessings upon you — or are you an unconquerable Kshatriya, or a Vaishya of the third caste, or a Shudra? Be truthful in your speech."
english translation
इत्येवमुक्तः स नराधिपेन ह्यवाक्छिरा दाशरथाय तस्मै । उवाच जातिं नृपपुङ्गवाय यत्कारणे चैव तपःप्रयत्नः ॥ 7-75-19 ॥
Thus addressed by the lord of men, that ascetic, with his head bent down, declared to that son of Dasharatha, the foremost of kings, his caste and the cause for which his striving in penance had been undertaken.
