एष शापवशादेव न वेद बलमात्मनः । वालिसुग्रीवयोर्वैरं यदा राम समुत्थितम् ॥ 7-36-41 ॥
Through the power of a curse alone, O Rama, he does not know his own strength — even at the time when the enmity between Vali and Sugriva had arisen.

न ह्येष राम सुग्रीवो भ्राम्यमाणो ऽपि वालिना ॥ 7-36-42 ॥
For indeed, O Rama, this Sugriva, though he was being driven about and harassed by Vali, [received no help from him];

देव जानाति न ह्येष बलमात्मनि मारुतिः । ऋषिशापाहृतबलस्तदैष कपिसत्तमः ॥ 7-36-43 ॥
O lord, this Maruti does not know the strength that is within himself; for this most excellent of monkeys had his power carried off by the curse of the sages.

सिंहः कुञ्जररुद्धो वा आस्थितः सहितो रणे ॥ 7-36-44 ॥
He is like a lion beset by an elephant, who stands firm and holds his ground when joined in battle.

पराक्रमोत्साहमतिप्रतापसौशील्यमाधुर्यनयानयैश्च । गाम्भीर्यचातुर्यसुवीर्यधैर्यैर्हनूमतः को ऽभ्यधिको ऽस्ति लोके ॥ 7-36-45 ॥
In valor, energy, surpassing majesty, good conduct, sweetness, and skill in policy and its opposite, and in profundity, cleverness, surpassing prowess, and steadfastness — who in the world is superior to Hanuman?
