Natyashastra
उत्तानः पार्श्वगश्चैव तथाऽधोमुख एव च । हस्तप्रचारस्त्रिविधो नाट्यतत्त्वसमाश्रयः ॥ १७०॥
There are three types of hand movements in acting: the raised (uttāna), sideways (pārśvaga), and downward (adhomukha) movements, which are rooted in the principles of dramatic art.
