"Now, the origin, descriptions, presiding deities, and examples of the sentiments (rasas) will be explained. The causes for the origin of rasas are classified into four types: Śṛṅgāra (the Erotic), Raudra (the Furious), Vīra (the Heroic), and Bībhatsa (the Odious). From Śṛṅgāra arises Hāsya (the Comic); from Raudra, Karuṇa (the Pathetic); from Vīra, Adbhuta (the Marvelous); and from Bībhatsa, Bhayānaka (the Terrible)."
