न भावहीनोऽस्ति रसो न भावो रसवर्जितः । परस्परकृता सिद्धिस्तयोरभिनये भवेत् ॥ ३६॥
"There is no sentiment (rasa) without emotion (bhāva), nor is there emotion devoid of sentiment. Their realization arises mutually and through representation (abhinaya)."
english translation
na bhAvahIno'sti raso na bhAvo rasavarjitaH । parasparakRtA siddhistayorabhinaye bhavet ॥ 36॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptव्यञ्जनौषधिसंयोगो यथान्नं स्वादुतां नयेत् । एवं भावा रसाश्चैव भावयन्ति परस्परम् ॥ ३७॥
"Just as the combination of spices and herbs imparts savoriness to food, in the same way, emotions (bhāvas) and sentiments (rasas) mutually enhance and bring out each other."
english translation
vyaJjanauSadhisaMyogo yathAnnaM svAdutAM nayet । evaM bhAvA rasAzcaiva bhAvayanti parasparam ॥ 37॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयथा बीजाद्भवेद्वृक्षो वृक्षात्पुष्पं फलं यथा । तथा मूलं रसाः सर्वे तेभ्यो भावा व्यवस्थिताः ॥ ३८॥
"Just as a tree grows from a seed and produces flowers and fruits, similarly, sentiments (rasas) are the root of all, and from them, emotions (bhāvas) are established."
english translation
yathA bIjAdbhavedvRkSo vRkSAtpuSpaM phalaM yathA । tathA mUlaM rasAH sarve tebhyo bhAvA vyavasthitAH ॥ 38॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतदेषं रसानामुत्पत्तिवर्णदैवतनिदर्शनान्यभिव्याख्यास्यामः । तेषामुत्पत्तिहेतवश्चत्वारो रसाः । तद्यथा - शृङ्गारो रौद्रौ वीरो बीभत्स इति । अत्र - शृङ्गाराद्धि भवेद्धास्यो रौद्राच्च करुणो रसः । वीराच्चैवाद्भुतोत्पत्तिर्बीभत्साच्च भयानकः ॥ ३९॥
"Now, the origin, descriptions, presiding deities, and examples of the sentiments (rasas) will be explained. The causes for the origin of rasas are classified into four types: Śṛṅgāra (the Erotic), Raudra (the Furious), Vīra (the Heroic), and Bībhatsa (the Odious). From Śṛṅgāra arises Hāsya (the Comic); from Raudra, Karuṇa (the Pathetic); from Vīra, Adbhuta (the Marvelous); and from Bībhatsa, Bhayānaka (the Terrible)."

tadeSaM rasAnAmutpattivarNadaivatanidarzanAnyabhivyAkhyAsyAmaH । teSAmutpattihetavazcatvAro rasAH । tadyathA - zaRGgAro raudrau vIro bIbhatsa iti । atra - zaRGgArAddhi bhaveddhAsyo raudrAcca karuNo rasaH । vIrAccaivAdbhutotpattirbIbhatsAcca bhayAnakaH ॥ 39॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशृङ्गारानुकृतिर्या तु स हास्यस्तु प्रकीर्तितः । रौद्रस्यैव च यत्कर्म स ज्ञेयः करुणो रसः ॥ ४०॥
"Imitation of Śṛṅgāra (the Erotic) is what is known as Hāsya (the Comic). The actions stemming from Raudra (the Furious) are to be understood as Karuṇa (the Pathetic) sentiment."

zaRGgArAnukRtiryA tu sa hAsyastu prakIrtitaH । raudrasyaiva ca yatkarma sa jJeyaH karuNo rasaH ॥ 40॥
