विनोदकारणं चेति नृत्तमेतत्प्रवर्तितम् । अतश्चैव प्रतिक्षेपाद्भूतसङ्घैः प्रवर्तिताः॥ २६६॥

This dance has also been initiated for the sake of amusement. Therefore, the Pratikṣepas (movements) were established by the assembly of Bhūtas (spirits).

ये गीतकादौ युज्यन्ते सम्यङ्नृत्तविभागकाः। देवेन चापि सम्प्रोक्तस्तण्डुस्ताण्डवपूर्वकम् ॥ २६७॥

Those that are appropriately used in the division of dance, associated with the songs, were also described by the deity, and Taṇḍu spoke of them as the precursor to the Tāṇḍava dance.

गीतप्रयोगमाश्रित्य नृत्तमेतत्प्रवर्त्यताम् । प्रायेण ताण्डवविधिर्देवस्तुत्याश्रयो भवेत् ॥२६८॥

Relying on the use of songs, this dance is performed. Generally, the method of Tāṇḍava is based on the praise of the deity, taking support from adoration.

सुकुमारप्रयोगश्च श‍ृङ्गाररससम्भवः । तस्य तण्डुप्रयुक्तस्य ताण्डवस्य विधिक्रियाम्॥२६९॥

The delicate form of the dance, which arises from the erotic sentiment, is the method of Tāṇḍava, as performed by Taṇḍu. This is the way the dance is executed.
