नियताक्षरसम्बद्धं छन्दोयतिसमन्वितम् । निबद्धं तु पदं ज्ञेयं सतालपतनाक्षरम् ॥ ३१॥
That which is connected with a fixed number of syllables, furnished with metre and proper caesura (yati), and whose syllables fall in accordance with a time-measure (tāla), is to be known as a regularly composed (nibaddha) Pada.
english translation
niyatAkSarasambaddhaM chandoyatisamanvitam । nibaddhaM tu padaM jJeyaM satAlapatanAkSaram ॥ 31॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअनिबद्धाक्षराणि स्युर्यान्य जातिकृतानि तु । आतोद्यकरणैस्तेषां विधानमभिनिर्मितम् ॥ ३२॥
Those syllables which are irregularly composed and not formed according to the Jāti songs have their performance arranged in connection with the instrumental karaṇas (techniques of the musical instruments).
english translation
anibaddhAkSarANi syuryAnya jAtikRtAni tu । AtodyakaraNaisteSAM vidhAnamabhinirmitam ॥ 32॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअपदान्यनिबद्धानि तालेन रहितानि तु । आतोद्येषु नियुक्तानि तानि तानि तु रञ्जयेत् ॥ ३३॥
Those Padas which are irregularly composed and devoid of time-measure (tāla) are employed in connection with the musical instruments, and they serve to embellish and delight them.

apadAnyanibaddhAni tAlena rahitAni tu । AtodyeSu niyuktAni tAni tAni tu raJjayet ॥ 33॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयानि चैवं निबद्धानि छन्दोवृत्तविधानतः । ध्रुवारूपाणि पूर्वाणि तानि वक्ष्यामि तत्त्वतः ॥ ३४॥
Those which are thus regularly composed according to the rules of metre and prosodic structure assume the form of Dhruvās; I shall now explain their characteristics in detail.

yAni caivaM nibaddhAni chandovRttavidhAnataH । dhruvArUpANi pUrvANi tAni vakSyAmi tattvataH ॥ 34॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअत्युक्तं च प्रतिष्ठं च मध्यं गायत्रमेव च । एताः स्थितावकृष्टास्तु त्र्! यस्रा ज्ञेयास्तु जातयः ॥ ३५॥
Atyukta, Pratiṣṭhā, Madhyā, and Gāyatrī — these are to be understood as the Tryasra classes of metre to be applied in the Sthitā and Apakṛṣṭā Dhruvās.
