चतुर्थी कण्डिका चैव द्वात्रिंशत्कलिका स्मृता । कलाभिरेवं निर्दिष्टा कण्डिका वर्धमानके ॥ ७६॥

The fourth Kaṇḍikā is said to consist of thirty-two Kalās. Thus, in the Vardhamāna, the Kaṇḍikās are defined by their respective Kalās.

These (Kaṇḍikās), arising solely from the Mārga, and devoid of the subsidiary elements of the Svālaya, are produced through their combinations in ones, twos, threes, and fours.

With the progressive increase (they) are produced through the combination of the parts of the Mārga-tāla. Beginning with the first Kaṇḍikā, the Bālatāla is applied.

One should make the final half of the Kalā deficient in this manner, forming the shorter (bāla) Tāla. After completing the second part, the first part should be performed with all its Kalās intact.

When it is then combined with the previous Tāla in all its Kalās, it becomes the Layāntara (tarita). In the Vardhamāna, the Layāntara should never be performed in the Vṛtti, but only in the Citra Mārga.
