भरतस्य वचः श्रुत्वा पप्रच्छुर्मुनयस्ततः । भगवन् श्रोतुमिच्छामो यजनं रङ्गसंश्रयम् ॥ १॥

Hearing the words of Bharata, the sages then asked: "O Lord, we wish to hear about the rituals of consecration (yajana) associated with the stage (raṅga)."
english translation
bharatasya vacaH zrutvA papracchurmunayastataH | bhagavan zrotumicchAmo yajanaM raGgasaMzrayam || 1||

अथ वा या क्रियास्तत्र लक्षणं यच्च पूजनम् । भविष्यद्भिर्नरैः कार्यं कथं तन्नाट्यवेश्मनि ॥ २॥
sanskrit
"Or else, what are the rites to be performed there, the characteristics and the mode of worship? How should these be undertaken by future men in the playhouse?"
english translation
atha vA yA kriyAstatra lakSaNaM yacca pUjanam | bhaviSyadbhirnaraiH kAryaM kathaM tannATyavezmani || 2||

इहादिर्नाट्ययोगस्य नाट्यमण्डप एव हि । तस्मात्तस्यैव तावत्त्वं लक्षणं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥ ३॥

"Here, the commencement of dramatic performance takes place only in the playhouse. Therefore, you ought to describe its characteristics first."
english translation
ihAdirnATyayogasya nATyamaNDapa eva hi | tasmAttasyaiva tAvattvaM lakSaNaM vaktumarhasi || 3||

तेषां तु वचनं श्रुत्वा मुनीनां भरतोऽब्रवीत् । लक्षणं पूजनं चैव श्रूयतां नाट्यवेश्मनः ॥ ४॥

Hearing the words of the sages, Bharata said: Listen to the characteristics and the consecration of the playhouse.

teSAM tu vacanaM zrutvA munInAM bharato'bravIt | lakSaNaM pUjanaM caiva zrUyatAM nATyavezmanaH || 4||

दिव्यानां मानसी सृष्टिर्गृहेषूपवनेषु च । (यथा भावाभिनिर्वर्त्याः सर्वे भावास्तु मानुषाः ॥) नराणां यत्नतः कार्या लक्षणाभिहिता क्रिया ॥ ५॥

The creation of celestial beings is mental, manifesting in houses and gardens. (Just as all emotions are expressed according to their nature,) For humans, actions must be performed diligently as prescribed by the characteristics.
english translation
divyAnAM mAnasI sRSTirgRheSUpavaneSu ca | (yathA bhAvAbhinirvartyAH sarve bhAvAstu mAnuSAH ||) narANAM yatnataH kAryA lakSaNAbhihitA kriyA || 5||
