भर्तुः शरीरशुश्रूषां धर्मकार्यं च नैत्यकम् । स्वा चैव कुर्यात् सर्वेषां नास्वजातिः कथं चन ॥ ८६ ॥

Among all (twice-born men) the wife of equal caste alone, not a wife of a different caste by any means, shall personally attend her husband and assist him in his daily sacred rites.

english translation

bhartuH zarIrazuzrUSAM dharmakAryaM ca naityakam | svA caiva kuryAt sarveSAM nAsvajAtiH kathaM cana || 86 ||

यस्तु तत् कारयेन् मोहात् सजात्या स्थितयाऽन्यया । यथा ब्राह्मणचाण्डालः पूर्वदृष्टस्तथैव सः ॥ ८७ ॥

But he who foolishly causes that (duty) to be performed by another, while his wife of equal caste is alive, is declared by the ancients (to be) as (despicable) as a Kandala (sprung from the) Brahmana (caste).

english translation

yastu tat kArayen mohAt sajAtyA sthitayA'nyayA | yathA brAhmaNacANDAlaH pUrvadRSTastathaiva saH || 87 ||

उत्कृष्टायाभिरूपाय वराय सदृशाय च । अप्राप्तामपि तां तस्मै कन्यां दद्याद् यथाविधि ॥ ८८ ॥

To a distinguished, handsome suitor (of) equal (caste) should (a father) give his daughter in accordance with the prescribed rule, though she have not attained (the proper age).

english translation

utkRSTAyAbhirUpAya varAya sadRzAya ca | aprAptAmapi tAM tasmai kanyAM dadyAd yathAvidhi || 88 ||

काममामरणात् तिष्ठेद् गृहे कन्यार्तुमत्यपि । न चैवैनां प्रयच्छेत् तु गुणहीनाय कर्हि चित् ॥ ८९ ॥

(But) the maiden, though marriageable, should rather stop in (the father’s) house until death, than that he should ever give her to a man destitute of good qualities.

english translation

kAmamAmaraNAt tiSThed gRhe kanyArtumatyapi | na caivainAM prayacchet tu guNahInAya karhi cit || 89 ||

त्रीणि वर्षाण्युदीक्षेत कुमार्यर्तुमती सती । ऊर्ध्वं तु कालादेतस्माद् विन्देत सदृशं पतिम् ॥ ९० ॥

Three years let a damsel wait, though she be marriageable; but after that time let her choose for herself a bridegroom (of) equal (caste and rank).
