मातापितृभ्यामुत्सृष्टं तयोरन्यतरेण वा । यं पुत्रं परिगृह्णीयादपविद्धः स उच्यते ॥ १७१ ॥

He whom (a man) receives as his son, (after he has been) deserted by his parents or by either of them, is called a son cast off (Apaviddha).

english translation

mAtApitRbhyAmutsRSTaM tayoranyatareNa vA | yaM putraM parigRhNIyAdapaviddhaH sa ucyate || 171 ||

पितृवेश्मनि कन्या तु यं पुत्रं जनयेद् रहः । तं कानीनं वदेन्नाम्ना वोढुः कन्यासमुद्भवम् ॥ १७२ ॥

sanskrit

A son whom a damsel secretly bears in the house of her father, one shall name the son of an unmarried damsel (Kanina, and declare) such offspring of an unmarried girl (to belong) to him who weds her (afterwards).

english translation

pitRvezmani kanyA tu yaM putraM janayed rahaH | taM kAnInaM vadennAmnA voDhuH kanyAsamudbhavam || 172 ||

या गर्भिणी संस्क्रियते ज्ञाताऽज्ञाताऽपि वा सती । वोढुः स गर्भो भवति सहोढ इति चोच्यते ॥ १७३ ॥

sanskrit

If one marries, either knowingly or unknowingly, a pregnant (bride), the child in her womb belongs to him who weds her, and is called (a son) received with the bride (Sahodha).

english translation

yA garbhiNI saMskriyate jJAtA'jJAtA'pi vA satI | voDhuH sa garbho bhavati sahoDha iti cocyate || 173 ||

क्रीणीयाद् यस्त्वपत्यार्थं मातापित्रोर्यमन्तिकात् । स क्रीतकः सुतस्तस्य सदृशोऽसदृशोऽपि वा ॥ १७४ ॥

sanskrit

If a man buys a (boy), whether equal or unequal (in good qualities), from his father and mother for the sake of having a son, that (child) is called a (son) bought (Kritaka).

english translation

krINIyAd yastvapatyArthaM mAtApitroryamantikAt | sa krItakaH sutastasya sadRzo'sadRzo'pi vA || 174 ||

या पत्या वा परित्यक्ता विधवा वा स्वयेच्छया । उत्पादयेत् पुनर्भूत्वा स पौनर्भव उच्यते ॥ १७५ ॥

sanskrit

If a woman abandoned by her husband, or a widow, of her own accord contracts a second marriage and bears (a son), he is called the son of a re-married woman (Paunarbhava).

english translation

yA patyA vA parityaktA vidhavA vA svayecchayA | utpAdayet punarbhUtvA sa paunarbhava ucyate || 175 ||
