श्रुत्वैतान् ऋषयो धर्मान् स्नातकस्य यथौदितान् । इदमूचुर्महात्मानमनलप्रभवं भृगुम् ॥ १ ॥
The sages, having heard the duties of a Snataka thus declared, spoke to great-souled Bhrigu, who sprang from fire:

zrutvaitAn RSayo dharmAn snAtakasya yathauditAn | idamUcurmahAtmAnamanalaprabhavaM bhRgum || 1 ||
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएवं यथोक्तं विप्राणां स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठताम् । कथं मृत्युः प्रभवति वेदशास्त्रविदां प्रभो ॥ २ ॥
How can Death have power over Brahmanas who know the sacred science, the Veda, (and) who fulfil their duties as they have been explained (by thee), O Lord? ’

evaM yathoktaM viprANAM svadharmamanutiSThatAm | kathaM mRtyuH prabhavati vedazAstravidAM prabho || 2 ||
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस तानुवाच धर्मात्मा महर्षीन् मानवो भृगुः । श्रूयतां येन दोषेण मृत्युर्विप्रान् जिघांसति ॥ ३ ॥
Righteous Bhrigu, the son of Manu, (thus) answered the great sages: ’Hear, (in punishment) of what faults Death seeks to shorten the lives of Brahmanas!’

sa tAnuvAca dharmAtmA maharSIn mAnavo bhRguH | zrUyatAM yena doSeNa mRtyurviprAn jighAMsati || 3 ||
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअनभ्यासेन वेदानामाचारस्य च वर्जनात् । आलस्यादन्नदोषाच्च मृत्युर्विप्राञ्जिघांसति ॥ ४ ॥
Through neglect of the Veda-study, through deviation from the rule of conduct, through remissness (in the fulfilment of duties), and through faults (committed by eating forbidden) food, Death becomes eager to shorten the lives of Brahmanas.’

hk transliteration by Sanscriptलशुनं गृञ्जनं चैव पलाण्डुं कवकानि च । अभक्ष्याणि द्विजातीनाममेध्यप्रभवानि च ॥ ५ ॥
Garlic, leeks and onions, mushrooms and (all plants), springing from impure (substances), are unfit to be eaten by twice-born men.
