आचारात्लभते ह्यायुराचारादीप्सिताः प्रजाः । आचाराद् धनमक्षय्यमाचारो हन्त्यलक्षणम् ॥ १५६ ॥

sanskrit

Through virtuous conduct he obtains long life, through virtuous conduct desirable offspring, through virtuous conduct imperishable wealth; virtuous conduct destroys (the effect of) inauspicious marks.

english translation

AcArAtlabhate hyAyurAcArAdIpsitAH prajAH | AcArAd dhanamakSayyamAcAro hantyalakSaNam || 156 ||

दुराचारो हि पुरुषो लोके भवति निन्दितः । दुःखभागी च सततं व्याधितोऽल्पायुरेव च ॥ १५७ ॥

sanskrit

For a man of bad conduct is blamed among people, constantly suffers misfortunes, is afflicted with diseases, and short-lived.

english translation

durAcAro hi puruSo loke bhavati ninditaH | duHkhabhAgI ca satataM vyAdhito'lpAyureva ca || 157 ||

सर्वलक्षणहीनोऽपि यः सदाचारवान्नरः । श्रद्दधानोऽनसूयश्च शतं वर्षाणि जीवति ॥ १५८ ॥

sanskrit

A man who follows the conduct of the virtuous, has faith and is free from envy, lives a hundred years, though he be entirely destitute of auspicious marks.

english translation

sarvalakSaNahIno'pi yaH sadAcAravAnnaraH | zraddadhAno'nasUyazca zataM varSANi jIvati || 158 ||

यद् यत् परवशं कर्म तत् तद् यत्नेन वर्जयेत् । यद् यदात्मवशं तु स्यात् तत् तत् सेवेत यत्नतः ॥ १५९ ॥

sanskrit

Let him carefully avoid all undertakings (the success of) which depends on others; but let him eagerly pursue that (the accomplishment of) which depends on himself.

english translation

yad yat paravazaM karma tat tad yatnena varjayet | yad yadAtmavazaM tu syAt tat tat seveta yatnataH || 159 ||

सर्वं परवशं दुःखं सर्वमात्मवशं सुखम् । एतद् विद्यात् समासेन लक्षणं सुखदुःखयोः ॥ १६० ॥

sanskrit

Everything that depends on others (gives) pain, everything that depends on oneself (gives) pleasure; know that this is the short definition of pleasure and pain.

english translation

sarvaM paravazaM duHkhaM sarvamAtmavazaM sukham | etad vidyAt samAsena lakSaNaM sukhaduHkhayoH || 160 ||
