Manusmriti
तेषामारक्षभूतं तु पूर्वं दैवं नियोजयेत् । रक्षांसि विप्रलुम्पन्ति श्राद्धमारक्षवर्जितम् ॥ २०४ ॥
Let him first invite a (Brahmana) in honour of the gods as a protection for the (offering to the manes); for the Rakshasas destroy a funeral sacrifice which is left without such a protection.
english translation
teSAmArakSabhUtaM tu pUrvaM daivaM niyojayet । rakSAMsi vipralumpanti zrAddhamArakSavarjitam ॥ 204 ॥
