चान्द्रायणं वा त्रीन् मासानभ्यस्येन्नियतैन्द्रियः । हविष्येण यवाग्वा वा गुरुतल्पापनुत्तये ॥ १०६ ॥

sanskrit

Or, controlling his organs, he may during three months continuously perform the lunar penance, (subsisting) on sacrificial food or barley-gruel, in order to remove (the guilt of) violating a Guru’s bed.

english translation

cAndrAyaNaM vA trIn mAsAnabhyasyenniyataindriyaH | haviSyeNa yavAgvA vA gurutalpApanuttaye || 106 ||

एतैर्व्रतैरपोहेयुर्महापातकिनो मलम् । उपपातकिनस्त्वेवमेभिर्नानाविधैर्व्रतैः ॥ १०७ ॥

sanskrit

By means of these penances men who have committed mortal sins (Mahapataka) may remove their guilt, but those who committed minor offences, causing loss of caste, (Upapataka, can do it) by the various following penances.

उपपातकसंयुक्तो गोघ्नो मासं यवान् पिबेत् । कृतवापो वसेद् गोष्ठे चर्मणा तेन संवृतः ॥ १०८ ॥

sanskrit

He who has committed a minor offence by slaying a cow (or bull) shall drink during (the first) month (a decoction of) barley-grains; having shaved all his hair, and covering himself with the hide (of the slain cow), he must live in a cow-house.

english translation

upapAtakasaMyukto goghno mAsaM yavAn pibet | kRtavApo vased goSThe carmaNA tena saMvRtaH || 108 ||

चतुर्थकालमश्नीयादक्षारलवणं मितम् । गोमूत्रेणाचरेत् स्नानं द्वौ मासौ नियतेन्द्रियः ॥ १०९ ॥

sanskrit

During the two (following) months he shall eat a small (quantity of food) without any factitious salt at every fourth meal-time, and shall bathe in the urine of cows, keeping his organs under control.

english translation

caturthakAlamaznIyAdakSAralavaNaM mitam | gomUtreNAcaret snAnaM dvau mAsau niyatendriyaH || 109 ||

दिवाऽनुगच्छेद् गास्तास्तु तिष्ठन्नूर्ध्वं रजः पिबेत् । शुश्रूषित्वा नमस्कृत्य रात्रौ वीरासनं वसेत् ॥ ११० ॥

sanskrit

During the day he shall follow the cows and, standing upright, inhale the dust (raised by their hoofs); at night, after serving and worshipping them, he shall remain in the (posture, called) virasana.

english translation

divA'nugacched gAstAstu tiSThannUrdhvaM rajaH pibet | zuzrUSitvA namaskRtya rAtrau vIrAsanaM vaset || 110 ||
