सर्वे वेदविदः शूराः सर्वे भास्वरमूर्तयः परावर्तत महाराज सुहृद दयूतम अनन्तरम ॥ २-५३-२१ ॥
'And they were all conversant with the Vedas and brave and of resplendent countenances. And, O great king, the friendly match at dice then commenced.' ॥ 2-53-21 ॥
english translation
[य] अयं बहुधनॊ राजन सागरावर्त संभवः मणिर हारॊत्तरः शरीमान कनकॊत्तम भूषणः ॥ २-५३-२२ ॥
'Yudhishthira said, "O king, this exquisite wealth of pearls, which was obtained from the ocean through its churning and is adorned with pure gold, is my stake."' ॥ 2-53-22 ॥
english translation
एतद राजन धनं मह्यं परतिपाणस तु कस तव भवत्व एष करमस तात जयाम्य एनं दुरॊदरम ॥ २-५३-२३ ॥
'What is your counter-stake, O great king? What wealth do you wish to wager against mine in this game?"' ॥ 2-53-23 ॥
english translation
[द] सन्ति मे मणयश चैव धनानि विविधानि च मत्सरश च न मे ऽरथेषु जयाम्य एनं दुरॊदरम ॥ २-५३-२४ ॥
'Duryodhana said, "I possess many jewels and considerable wealth, but I am not proud of them. Feel free to win this stake."' ॥ 2-53-24 ॥

[व] ततॊ जग्राह शकुनिस तान अक्षान अक्षतत्त्ववित जितम इत्य एव शकुनिर युधिष्ठिरम अभाषत ॥ २-५३-२५ ॥
'Vaisampayana continued: 'Then Shakuni, skilled in the game of dice, took up the dice and, after casting them, declared to Yudhishthira, 'Behold, I have won!'' ॥ 2-53-25 ॥
