श्री भगवानुवाच अथ ते सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि तत्त्वानां लक्षणं पृथक्। यद्विदित्वा विमुच्येत पुरुषः प्राकृतैर्गुणैः॥2-1॥
Sri bhagavan said : I shall now explicitly expound to you the differentiating characteristics of various entities, knowing which man becomes free of various entities, knowing which a man becomes free from the qualities of prakriti.
english translation
zrI bhagavAnuvAca atha te sampravakSyAmi tattvAnAM lakSaNaM pRthak। yadviditvA vimucyeta puruSaH prAkRtairguNaiH॥2-1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptज्ञानं निःश्रेयसार्थाय पुरुषस्यात्मदर्शनम्। यदाहुर्वर्णये तत्ते हृदयेग्रन्थिभेदनम्॥।2-2॥
I shall describe to you that knowledge about which great sages speak, which is the means to the supreme good of man, which gives Self-knowledge and cuts the knots of the heart.
english translation
jJAnaM niHzreyasArthAya puruSasyAtmadarzanam। yadAhurvarNaye tatte hRdayegranthibhedanam॥।2-2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअनादिरात्मा पुरुषो निर्गुणः प्रकृतेः परः। प्रत्यग्धामा स्वयंज्योतिर्विश्वं येन समन्वितम्॥2-3॥
Before creation, the PuruSa was the beginningless Self, attributeless, beyond prakriti, the very subject and Self-shining, and even now it alone pervades the world.
english translation
anAdirAtmA puruSo nirguNaH prakRteH paraH। pratyagdhAmA svayaMjyotirvizvaM yena samanvitam॥2-3॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस एष प्रकृतिं सूक्ष्मां दैवीं गुणमयीं विभुः। यदृच्छयैवोपगतामभ्यपद्यत लीलया॥2-4॥
The same infinite Lord, by chance alone, in sport, became manifested as the subtle prakriti with qualities.
english translation
sa eSa prakRtiM sUkSmAM daivIM guNamayIM vibhuH। yadRcchayaivopagatAmabhyapadyata lIlayA॥2-4॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptगुणैर्विचित्राः सृजतीं सरूपाः प्रकृतिं प्रजाः। विलोक्य मुमुहे सद्यः स इह ज्ञानगूहया॥2-5॥
Prakriti with its qualities creates a variety of being like itlsef. The Lord/Self having seen the creation got (as it were) completely deluded through the veiling of knowledge.
english translation
guNairvicitrAH sRjatIM sarUpAH prakRtiM prajAH। vilokya mumuhe sadyaH sa iha jJAnagUhayA॥2-5॥
