वृथा वृष्टिः समुद्रेषुवृथा तृप्तस्य भोजनम्। वृथा दानं समर्थस्य वृथा दीपो दिवापि च ॥१६II

The rain falling on the sea is useless. After being satisfied with food, food is useless. Giving alms to a capable person is useless and lighting a lamp during the day is useless.

नास्ति मेघसमं तोयं नास्ति चात्मसमं बलम्। नास्ति चक्षुःसमं तेजो नास्ति धान्यसमं प्रियम् ॥१७II

sanskrit

There is no water like rain. There is no power equal to your power. There is no light like the light of the eyes. There is no greater wealth than food.

अधना धनमिच्छन्ति वाचं चैव चतुष्पदाः । मानवाः स्वर्गमिच्छन्ति मोक्षमिच्छन्ति देवताः ॥१८II

The poor wish for wealth. Animals desire speech. Human beings wish for heaven and gods wish for salvation.

Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is fickle. Our breathing is also fickle. The whole world is fickle, that is, nothing is stable in this world. If anything is stable here it is only religion.
