षण्णवतिभेदभिन्नश्चतुर्विकल्पो गणो यतस्तस्मात् । षण्णनवतिगुणः कार्यः सा सङ्ख्या भवति गन्धानाम् ॥ ७७-२१ ॥

Every set of four substances gives us 96 varieties; by multiplying 1820 by 96 we shall obtain the number already stated, viz., 174720.

english translation

SaNNavatibhedabhinnazcaturvikalpo gaNo yatastasmAt । SaNNanavatiguNaH kAryaH sA saGkhyA bhavati gandhAnAm ॥ 77-21 ॥

पूर्वेण पूर्वेण गतेन युक्तं स्थानं विनान्त्यं प्रवदन्ति सङ्ख्याम् । इच्छाविकल्पैः क्रमशो अभिनीय नीते निवृत्तिः पुनरन्यनीतिः ॥ ७७-२२ ॥

Beginning from unity form several series of numbers by adding together each figure with the next and the sum with the next and so on omitting only the last, the last of the senes will represent the number of combinations required.

pUrveNa pUrveNa gatena yuktaM sthAnaM vinAntyaM pravadanti saGkhyAm । icchAvikalpaiH kramazo abhinIya nIte nivRttiH punaranyanItiH ॥ 77-22 ॥

द्वित्रिइन्द्रियाष्टभागैरगुरुः पत्रं तुरुष्कशैलेयौ विषयाष्टपक्षदहनाः प्रियङ्गुमुस्तारसाः केशः ॥ ७७-२३ ॥

Agam, Pattra, Turuṣka and Śaileya shall be mixed in two, three, five and eight parts and Priyaṅgu, Musta, Rasa and Keśa shall be mixed in five, eight, two, and three parts.

dvitriindriyASTabhAgairaguruH patraM turuSkazaileyau viSayASTapakSadahanAH priyaGgumustArasAH kezaH ॥ 77-23 ॥

स्पृक्कात्वक्तगराणां मांस्याश्च कृतएकसप्तषड्भागाः । सप्तऋतुवेदचन्द्रैर्मलयनखश्रीककुन्दुरुकाः ॥ ७७-२४ ॥

Spṛkka, Cinnamon, Tagara and Māṃsī shall be mixed in four, one, seven and six parts; and Sandal, Nakha, Śrīka and Kunduruka shall be mixed in seven, six, four and one parts.

षोडशके कच्छपुटे यथा तथा मिश्रिते चतुर्द्रव्ये । ये अत्राष्टादश भागास्ते अस्मिन्गन्धादयो योगाः ॥ ७७-२५ ॥

Each set of four substances may be mixed in all possible ways in the parts mentioned—the number of parts being always eighteen in the case of each mixture. The mixtures form perfumes, ointment and the like.
