अवमर्दनं इति निःशेषं एव सञ्छाद्य यदि चिरं तिष्ठेत् । हन्यात्प्रधानभूपान् प्रधानदेशांश् च तिमिरमयः ॥ ५-४८ ॥

If the eclipse should be a total one and continue so for a time, it is known as Avamardana (tormenting): the then chief provinces will suffer and the then chief rulers will be afflicted with miseries.

english translation

avamardanaM iti niHzeSaM eva saJchAdya yadi ciraM tiSThet । hanyAtpradhAnabhUpAn pradhAnadezAMz ca timiramayaH ॥ 5-48 ॥
