भस्माङ्गारास्थ्यूषरतुषकेशश्वभ्रकर्कटऽवासैः । श्वाविध मूषकविवरैर्वल्मीकैर्या च सन्त्यक्ता ॥ ४८-१६ ॥

It must be a spot free from ash, charcoal, bones, saline soil, hair, ditch, crab holes, hog holes, rat holes and ant hills.

bhasmAGgArAsthyUSaratuSakezazvabhrakarkaTa'vAsaiH । zvAvidha mUSakavivarairvalmIkairyA ca santyaktA ॥ 48-16 ॥

धात्री घना सुगन्धा स्निग्धा मधुरा समा च विजयाय । सेनावासे अप्येवं योजयितव्या यथायोगम् ॥ ४८-१७ ॥

The site may be firm, of good scent, of agreeable appearance and of sweet soil and even, or the ground may be one which at one time was occupied by an army, if such ground were of the description given above. If the king performs his Puṣya Snāna in any of these places, he will triumph in war.

dhAtrI ghanA sugandhA snigdhA madhurA samA ca vijayAya । senAvAse apyevaM yojayitavyA yathAyogam ॥ 48-17 ॥

निष्क्रम्य पुरान्नक्तं दैवज्ञामात्ययाजकाः प्राच्याम् । कौबेर्यां वा कृत्वा बलिं दिशीशाधिपायां वा ॥ ४८-१८ ॥

The Jyotiṣaka, the minister and the priest shall leave the town by night and march towards the north or north-east.

english translation

niSkramya purAnnaktaM daivajJAmAtyayAjakAH prAcyAm । kauberyAM vA kRtvA baliM dizIzAdhipAyAM vA ॥ 48-18 ॥

लाजाअक्षतदधिकुसुमैः प्रयतः प्रणतः पुरोहितः कुर्यात् । आवाहनं अथ मन्त्रस्तस्मिन्मुनिभिः समुद्दिष्टः ॥ ४८-१९ ॥

There the priest shall perform pūjā to the Devas with fried grain, coloured rice, curdled milk and flowers; the mantras for invocation of the Devas have also been stated by the Ṛṣis:

lAjAakSatadadhikusumaiH prayataH praNataH purohitaH kuryAt । AvAhanaM atha mantrastasminmunibhiH samuddiSTaH ॥ 48-19 ॥

आगच्छन्तु सुराः सर्वे ये अत्र पूजाअभिलाषिणः । दिशो नागा द्विजाश्चएव ये चाप्यन्ये अंशभागिनः ॥ ४८-२० ॥

I invite the presence here of all the Devas whom this pūjā might please and in whose honour this pūjā is performed—the Dik Devas, the Nāga Devas and the Brāhmaṇa Devas.
