पवनः पवनाभिहतो गगनादवनौ यदा समापतति । भवति तदा निर्घातः स च पापो दीप्तविहगरुतः ॥ ३९-०१ ॥
When two winds come in collision, that which, being struck, falls on the Earth is known as thunderbolt; if at the time birds should begin to sound turning to the Sun there will be misery on Earth.
english translation
pavanaH pavanAbhihato gaganAdavanau yadA samApatati । bhavati tadA nirghAtaH sa ca pApo dIptavihagarutaH ॥ 39-01 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअर्कौदये अधिकरणिकनृपधनियोधाङ्गनावणिग्वेश्याः । आप्रहरांशे अजऽविकं उपहन्यात्शूद्रपौरांश्च ॥ ३९-०२ ॥
If there should occur a fall of thunderbolt at sunrise, officials, kings, rich men, soldiers, women, merchants and prostitutes will perish; if the fall should occur within three hours after sunrise, sheep, the Śūdras and citizens will suffer.
english translation
arkaudaye adhikaraNikanRpadhaniyodhAGganAvaNigvezyAH । ApraharAMze aja'vikaM upahanyAtzUdrapaurAMzca ॥ 39-02 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआमध्याह्नाद्राजौपसेविनो ब्राह्मणांश्च पीडयति । वैश्यजलदांस्तृतीये चौरान्प्रहरे चतुर्थे तु ॥ ३९-०३ ॥
If the fall should occur before midday, the king’s servants and Brāhmaṇas will suffer; if it should occur within three hours after midday, the Vaiśyas and clouds will suffer, and if before sunset, thieves will suffer.
english translation
AmadhyAhnAdrAjaupasevino brAhmaNAMzca pIDayati । vaizyajaladAMstRtIye caurAnprahare caturthe tu ॥ 39-03 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअस्तं याते नीचान्प्रथमे यामे निहन्ति सस्यानि । रात्रौ द्वितीययामे पिशाचसङ्घान्निपीडयति ॥ ३९-०४ ॥
If the fall of thunderbolt should occur at sunset, low caste men will suffer; if it should occur in the first three hours after sunset, crops will suffer; and if before midnight, ghosts will suffer.
english translation
astaM yAte nIcAnprathame yAme nihanti sasyAni । rAtrau dvitIyayAme pizAcasaGghAnnipIDayati ॥ 39-04 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतुरगकरिणस्तृतीये विनिहन्याद्यायिनश्चतुर्थे च । भैरवजर्जरशब्दो याति यतस्तां दिशं हन्ति ॥ ३९-०५ ॥
If the fall of the thunderbolt should occur within the three hours after midnight, horses and elephants will perish; and if before sunrise, travellers will suffer, and also those countries will suffer in the direction of which the roar of thunder appears to move.
