सूर्यस्य विविधवर्णाः पवनेन विघट्टिताः कराः साभ्रे । वियति धनुःसंस्थाना ये दृश्यन्ते तदिन्द्रधनुः ॥ ३५-०१ ॥

The many coloured rays of the Sun falling upon the clouds and being broken by the winds take the shape of the rainbow in the sky,

english translation

sUryasya vividhavarNAH pavanena vighaTTitAH karAH sAbhre । viyati dhanuHsaMsthAnA ye dRzyante tadindradhanuH ॥ 35-01 ॥

के चिदनन्तकुलौरगनिःश्वासौद्भूतं आहुराचार्याः । तद्यायिनां नृपाणां अभिमुखं अजयऽवहं भवति ॥ ३५-०२ ॥

In the opinion of certain writers the rainbow (indrāyudha) is formed of the expired breath of certain serpents of the divine order; princes that march out for fight in the direction of the rainbow will suffer defeat.

ke cidanantakulauraganiHzvAsaudbhUtaM AhurAcAryAH । tadyAyinAM nRpANAM abhimukhaM ajaya'vahaM bhavati ॥ 35-02 ॥

अच्छिन्नं अवनिगाढं द्युतिमत्स्निग्धं घनं विविधवर्णम् । द्विरुदितं अनुलोमं च प्रशस्तं अम्भः प्रयच्छति च ॥ ३५-०३ ॥

If two rainbows, similar to each other should appear perfect, unbroken, bent towards the Earth, bright, glossy, thick and variegated in colour, there will be abundant rain.

acchinnaM avanigADhaM dyutimatsnigdhaM ghanaM vividhavarNam । dviruditaM anulomaM ca prazastaM ambhaH prayacchati ca ॥ 35-03 ॥

विदिगुद्भूतं दिक्स्वामिनाशनं व्यभ्रजं मरककारि । पाटलपीतकनीलैः शस्त्राग्निक्षुत्कृता दोषाः ॥ ३५-०४ ॥

Rainbows appearing in particular quarters of the sky will cause the death of the persons represented by such quarters, and if the rainbow should be seen in places other than the sky, there will be deaths in the land; if it should appear white-red, mankind will suffer from weapons; if yellow, from fire; and if blue, from starvation.

vidigudbhUtaM diksvAminAzanaM vyabhrajaM marakakAri । pATalapItakanIlaiH zastrAgnikSutkRtA doSAH ॥ 35-04 ॥

जलमध्ये अनावृष्टिर्भुवि सस्यवधस्तरौ स्थिते व्याधिः । वाल्मीके शस्त्रभयं निशि सचिववधाय धनुरैन्द्रम् ॥ ३५-०५ ॥

If the rainbow should be seen in the middle of water, there will be drought; if on earth, crops will be injured; if on trees, there will be disease in the land; if on ant hills, there will be wars, and if seen at night, ministers will perish.

jalamadhye anAvRSTirbhuvi sasyavadhastarau sthite vyAdhiH । vAlmIke zastrabhayaM nizi sacivavadhAya dhanuraindram ॥ 35-05 ॥
