ज्योतिःशास्त्रसमुद्रं प्रमथ्य मतिमन्दराद्रिणा अथ मया । लोकस्य आलोककरः शास्त्रशशाङ्कः समुत्क्षिप्तः ॥ १०६-०१ ॥

Planting the hill of my learning in the vast ocean of Jyotiṣaśāstra and churning it, I have thus brought out this bright Moon of Science which sheds its light of knowledge over the whole world.

english translation

jyotiHzAstrasamudraM pramathya matimandarAdriNA atha mayA । lokasya AlokakaraH zAstrazazAGkaH samutkSiptaH ॥ 106-01 ॥

पूर्वाचार्यग्रन्था नौत्सृष्टाः कुर्वता मया शास्त्रम् । तानवलोक्यैदं च प्रयतध्वं कामतः सुजनाः ॥ १०६-०२ ॥

O you good men, I have not omitted to mention anything contained in the old Śāstras; you may compare my work with the Śāstras and follow the rules freely.

english translation

pUrvAcAryagranthA nautsRSTAH kurvatA mayA zAstram । tAnavalokyaidaM ca prayatadhvaM kAmataH sujanAH ॥ 106-02 ॥

अथ वा कृशम् अपि सुजनः प्रथयति दोषार्णवाद्गुणं दृष्ट्वा । नीचस्तद्विपरीतः प्रकृतिरियं साध्वसाधूनाम् ॥ १०६-०३ ॥

If good critics discover a few merits in an ocean of demerits, it is their nature to bring the former to the notice of the world, while the nature of bad critics is just the reverse.

english translation

atha vA kRzam api sujanaH prathayati doSArNavAdguNaM dRSTvA । nIcastadviparItaH prakRtiriyaM sAdhvasAdhUnAm ॥ 106-03 ॥

दुर्जनहुताशतप्तं काव्यसुवर्णं विशुद्धिं आयाति । श्रावयितव्यं तस्माद्दुष्टजनस्य प्रयत्नेन ॥ १०६-०४ ॥

Exposed to the fire of malicious criticism, the gold of a literary production becomes purified. Every attempt must therefore be made to bring a work to the notice of severe critics.

durjanahutAzataptaM kAvyasuvarNaM vizuddhiM AyAti । zrAvayitavyaM tasmAdduSTajanasya prayatnena ॥ 106-04 ॥

ग्रन्थस्य यत्प्रचरतो अस्य विनाशं एति लेख्याद्बहुश्रुतमुखऽधिगमक्रमेण । यद्वा मया कुकृतं अल्पं इहऽकृतं वा कार्यं तदत्र विदुषा परिहृत्य रागम् ॥ १०६-०५ ॥

If, in any of the copies of this work or in the recitation of it by persons who have learned it from their preceptors, the learned happen to notice any portion either missing or erroneous or omitted, they will, it is hoped, setting aside all feelings of malice, correct the error or supply the omission.

granthasya yatpracarato asya vinAzaM eti lekhyAdbahuzrutamukha'dhigamakrameNa । yadvA mayA kukRtaM alpaM iha'kRtaM vA kAryaM tadatra viduSA parihRtya rAgam ॥ 106-05 ॥
