अवस्थावशतः प्रोक्तं ग्रहाणां यत् फलं मुने । का साऽवस्था मुनिश्रेष्ठ कतिधा चेति कथ्ययाम् ॥ १॥
O Maharishi Parashar, you have earlier stated, that the Avasthas, or states of the Grahas are to be considered in the context of the effects of the Grahas. Be so kind to tell me about this.
english translation
avasthAvazataH proktaM grahANAM yat phalaM mune । kA sA'vasthA munizreSTha katidhA ceti kathyayAm ॥ 1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअवस्था विविधाः सन्ति ग्रहाणां दिवजसत्तम । सारभूताश्च यास्तासु बालाद्यास्ता वदाम्यहम् ॥ २॥
O excellent of Brahmins, various kinds of Avasthas of the Grahas have been expounded. Out of these, I will give you the summary of Baal (infant) and other states of the Grahas.
english translation
avasthA vividhAH santi grahANAM divajasattama । sArabhUtAzca yAstAsu bAlAdyAstA vadAmyaham ॥ 2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptक्रमाद् बालः कुमारोऽथ युवा वृद्धस्तथा मृतः । षडंशैरसमे खेटः समे ज्ञेयो विपर्ययात् ॥ ३॥
Baal, Kumar, Yuv, Vriddh and Mrit Avastha (Baal Adi Avasthas). Infant, youthful, adolescent, old and dead are the states of the Grahas, placed in the ascending order at the rate of six degrees in odd Rāśis. In the case of even Rāśis this arrangement is in reverse order. (Vriddh - Advanced, Mrit - In extremis)

kramAd bAlaH kumAro'tha yuvA vRddhastathA mRtaH । SaDaMzairasame kheTaH same jJeyo viparyayAt ॥ 3॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptफलं पादमितं बाले फलार्धं च कुमारके । यूनि पूर्णं फलं ज्ञेयं वृद्धे किञ्चित् मृते च खम् ॥ ४॥
Results. One fourth, half, full, negligible and nil are the grades of the results, due to a Grah in infant, youthful, adolescent, old and dead Avasthas.

phalaM pAdamitaM bAle phalArdhaM ca kumArake । yUni pUrNaM phalaM jJeyaM vRddhe kiJcit mRte ca kham ॥ 4॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस्वभोच्चयोः समसुहृद्भयोः शत्रुभनीचयोः । जाग्रत्स्वप्नसुषुप्त्याख्या अवस्था नामदृक्फलाः ॥ ५॥
Awakening, Dreaming and Sleeping States. If a Grah is in its own Rāśi, or in exaltation, it is said to be in a state of awakening (alertness). In the Rāśi of a friend, or of a neutral it is in dreaming state, while in an enemy‟s Rāśi, or in debilitation it is in a state of sleeping.

svabhoccayoH samasuhRdbhayoH zatrubhanIcayoH । jAgratsvapnasuSuptyAkhyA avasthA nAmadRkphalAH ॥ 5॥
