अत्याहारितम् अर्थं वा स्वयं पर मुखेन वा ॥ अतिभारे नियुक्तं वा भङ्क्त्वा परम् उपस्थितम् ।
A friend who is displeased owing to his having to pay much, or owing to his not having received his due or owing to his dissatisfaction even after the receipt of his due;
english translation
atyAhAritam arthaM vA svayaM para mukhena vA ॥ atibhAre niyuktaM vA bhaGktvA param upasthitam ।
hk transliteration by Sanscriptउपेक्षितम् अशक्त्या वा प्रार्थयित्वा विरोधितम् ॥ कृच्छ्रेण साध्यते मित्रं सिद्धं च आशु विरज्यति ॥
A friend who has voluntarily paid much or who is made by another to pay much (to his ally); a friend who is kept under pressure, or who, having broken the bond of friendship, sought friendship with another;
english translation
upekSitam azaktyA vA prArthayitvA virodhitam ॥ kRcchreNa sAdhyate mitraM siddhaM ca Azu virajyati ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकृत प्रयासं मान्यं वा मोहान् मित्रम् अमानितम् । मानितं वा न सदृशं शक्तितो वा निवारितम् ॥
A friend who is neglected owing to inability to retain his friendship; and a friend who has become an enemy in spite of his ally's entreaties to the contrary;--such friends are hardly acquired; and if acquired at all, they turn away.
english translation
kRta prayAsaM mAnyaM vA mohAn mitram amAnitam । mAnitaM vA na sadRzaM zaktito vA nivAritam ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptमित्र उपघात त्रस्तं वा शङ्कितं वा अरि-संहितात् । दूष्यैर् वा भेदितुं मित्रं साध्यं सिद्धं च तिष्ठति ॥
A friend who has realised the responsibilities of friendship, or who is honourable; or whose disappointment is due to want of information, or who, though excited, is unequal (to the task), or who is made to turn back owing to fear from another;
english translation
mitra upaghAta trastaM vA zaGkitaM vA ari-saMhitAt । dUSyair vA bhedituM mitraM sAdhyaM siddhaM ca tiSThati ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतस्मान् न उत्पादयेद् एनान् दोषान् मित्र उपघातकान् ॥ उत्पन्नान् वा प्रशमयेद् गुणैर् दोष उपघातिभिः ॥
Or who is frightened at the destruction of another friend, or who is apprehensive of danger from the combination of enemies, or who is made by traitors to give up his friendship,--it is possible to acquire such a friend; and if acquired, he keeps up his friendship.
english translation
tasmAn na utpAdayed enAn doSAn mitra upaghAtakAn ॥ utpannAn vA prazamayed guNair doSa upaghAtibhiH ॥
