प्रियम् एक पुत्रं बध्नीयात् ॥

When a king has an only son who is either devoid of worldly pleasures or is a favourite child, the king may keep him under chains.

बहु पुत्रः प्रत्यन्तम् अन्य विषयं वा प्रेषयेद् यत्र गर्भः पण्यं डिम्बो वा न भवेत् ॥

If a king has many sons, he may send some of them to where there is no heir apparent, nor a child either just born or in the embryo.

english translation

bahu putraH pratyantam anya viSayaM vA preSayed yatra garbhaH paNyaM Dimbo vA na bhavet ॥

आत्म सम्पन्नं सैनापत्ये यौवराज्ये वा स्थापयेत् ॥

When a prince is possessed of good and amicable qualities, he may be made the commander-in-chief or installed as heir apparent.

Atma sampannaM sainApatye yauvarAjye vA sthApayet ॥

बुद्धिमान् आहार्य बुद्धिर् दुर्बुद्धिर् इति पुत्र विशेषाः ॥

Sons are of three kinds: those of sharp intelligence; those of stagnant intelligence; and those of perverted mind.

buddhimAn AhArya buddhir durbuddhir iti putra vizeSAH ॥

शिष्यमाणो धर्म अर्थाव् उपलभते च अनुतिष्ठति च बुद्धिमान् ॥

Whoever carries into practice whatever he is taught concerning righteousness and wealth is one of sharp intelligence. whoever never carries into practice the good instructions he has imbibed is one of stagnant intelligence.

ziSyamANo dharma arthAv upalabhate ca anutiSThati ca buddhimAn ॥
